"Morag and her ensemble made our evening absolutely phenomenal. What a treat to be able to listen to such great musicians. They were exactly what our ball needed. They also kindly took my request to prepare "Sultans of Swing" for the evening and made a magnificent version of it that we will remember for years to come. I hope I'll be able to re-organise such an event to be able to call them again! When I asked my partner if he had anything to add to the review he just said "banging"."

FAQs about hiring String Quartets in Scotland

Take the stress out of hiring musicians with Encore

What is a string quartet?

A string quartet is made up of two violins, one viola, and one cello. The melody will be played by the lead violinist, who will be backed by the second violinist. The cello offers a deep base with intermittent melodies, while the viola provides mid-range harmonies. It is also possible to hire an electric string quartet. Expect unique instrument designs and more of a show/performance than an acoustic string quartet from this electric variation of the standard string quartet line-up.

Is a string quartet good for a wedding?

A traditional string quartet can be an excellent choice for a wedding, adding a touch of elegance and sophistication to the ceremony. Their classical repertoire, featuring compositions from renowned artists like Mozart, Bach, and Beethoven, creates a timeless ambiance, enhancing the romantic atmosphere of the occasion. String quartets can also be incredibly versatile; they can seamlessly transition from classical music during the ceremony to contemporary songs during the reception. This adaptability allows them to cater to various musical tastes and preferences, ensuring a memorable experience for guests with diverse tastes. Moreover, the live performance of string instruments adds a personal and intimate element to the event, leaving a lasting impression on attendees. Their enchanting melodies provide a beautiful backdrop for key moments like the bride's entrance, exchanging vows, and the first dance. In summary, a string quartet can elevate the emotional resonance of a wedding, making it a sophisticated choice for couples seeking a refined and melodious ambience. Their live music enriches the ceremony and reception, creating a memorable atmosphere that enhances the overall wedding experience.

How long should string quartet play at wedding?

When booking a string quartet for your wedding ceremony, you will be provided with music for the following parts of the ceremony: - When the guests arrive - During the bridal procession - While signing the register - When you and your partner exit the ceremony Wedding string quartets are also frequently present at drinks receptions, for example, during cocktail hour and/or dinner. They are loud enough to be heard without drowning out speech. This makes them an excellent alternative for providing background music while retaining the intensity of a live music performance.

Where does string quartet sit for wedding ceremony?

In a wedding ceremony, a string quartet perform to the side, near the front of the venue or ceremony space. Their placement ensures they are visible to guests while maintaining a discreet presence. Whether indoors or outdoors, their strategic position allows their music to enhance the ambience, adding a touch of elegance to the occasion. Coordination with venue staff or wedding planners helps determine the ideal placement for both visibility and acoustics, ensuring the quartet's music resonates beautifully throughout the ceremony.

What makes a good string quartet?

A good string quartet needs skilled musicians who can play their instruments well. They should know how to play their parts with all the small details and techniques. This ensures that the music they make is of high quality and sounds good to the listeners. In addition to being skilled, a good quartet also needs to work well together as a group. They should be able to blend their individual sounds to create a balanced and harmonious overall sound. Experienced string players can also play different types of music, such as classical, jazz, pop, and contemporary. At Encore, we have a collection of talented, versatile, and professional string quartets for hire to help you create a memorable musical experience. We also have a team of experts who are there to help make the bookings process for hiring a string quartet as smooth as possible.

What is the difference between string quartet and orchestra?

String Quartets A string quartet consists of four musicians – two violinists, a violist, and a cellist. String quartets exclusively feature string instruments and focus on intimate chamber music, performing smaller-scale compositions with intricate arrangements. Orchestras An orchestra is a much larger ensemble comprising multiple sections of instruments, including strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. In addition to strings, orchestras have woodwind, brass, and percussion sections, creating a broader and more diverse range of sounds. Orchestras are capable of performing complex symphonies, concertos, and large-scale compositions, producing grand, sweeping musical landscapes.
