About The elusive Black Dog Ceilidh Band

One of the Eastern County's top ceilidh bands. Based in South Lincolnshire but playing anywhere. The fun doesn't stop until you do!
Ceilidh band
Bourne
Public liability insurance of £10 million

The "Dogs" are one of the most popular bands in their home county of Lincolnshire and surrounding counties. They are well known on the Eastern side of UK but have been seen in places as far away as the North West, the West Midlands and the South Coast. How did their name come about? Many years ago the line-up went through many band names – none of which they liked. Then, one Saturday evening, loading up after a gig, someone came up and said," I like your music but I never know where you are going to be next. You are harder to find than Black Shuck!” Bearing in mind that this was out in the Lincolnshire fens we assumed Black Shuck meant something so, after a bit of research all became clear. Most of the eastern counties have legends about a mysterious black dog, known in various regions as Black Shuck, Old Shuck, Old Shock or simply Shuck which is the name given to a ghostly black dog which is said to roam the coastline and countryside of East Anglia. That is how the band came to be The elusive Black Dog! The band is made up of long serving musicians playing guitar, bass guitar, melodeon and drums plus their seasoned caller. They have played at festivals, private parties, celebrations, corporate events and fund raisers. The band has full public liability insurance, they carry all their own sound and lighting equipment and everything is annually PAT tested.

We have a good sized church - loved by so many. We booked this band twelve months ago following a recommendation. By the end of the evening everyone was totally exhausted from the fun and excitement. We immediately arranged a repeat visit. Their return was even better and the vicar danced all night! This is a very friendly and exciting band which we will engage again. It’s not often that we find such a compromising group. The musicians appreciated the venue and I can guarantee they’ll be back next year!

I've seen and danced to The Elusive Black Dog Ceilidh Band on a number of occasions, and have always really enjoyed the experience. Chris, the caller, always seems to pitch it perfectly, whether it's a room full of experts or a room full of newbies, or most likely somewhere in-between, everybody has a great time. So when we were looking for a ceilidh band for an event at our village hall they were the obvious choice. We first booked them a year or so ago, and on the strength of that had them back again this year. We've had fantastic feedback from both events, whether that was from those dancing, watching or just enjoying the excellent music. The band were very easy to work with, amenable on timings and happy to help out with other things as required. Highly recommended.

Customer questions

Can you perform covers?

We do not perform covers. Our music is up tempo, "rocky" versions of traditional English (mainly), Irish and Scottish tunes.

Do you have different line-up options?

Our usual line-up is a four piece plus caller. Electric guitar, electric bass, melodeon, drums and a caller. We can "knock down" to just guitar, melodeon and caller at a reduced rate.

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

“We always try our best to be flexible to help ensure your event runs as smoothly as possible. If timings change slightly in the run up to the event just let us know.”

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

We provide recorded music through our own system before the performance and during breaks.

How much time do you need to set up?

We like to arrive set up about 1 to 1.5 hours before the time for public admission or guests arrival. As soon as our PA is set up we can provide recorded background music. If we find we are required to set up in the same room where guests are already assembled (particularly weddings), we are very experienced in coping with this scenario.

Do you provide a caller?

“Yes we do! We have a fantastic caller as an important part of our Ceilidh band!” He is very well respected and is often asked to stand in with other bands who find themselves without a caller.

Can I pick the songs you play from the set list?

“We have a comprehensive set list which has developed through countless performances and learning what works best to ensure guests dance and have an amazing time. However, if you have a particular dance/tune which you want included we're definitely happy to chat through and find what works for your event. ”

Is all of the equipment (e.g. PA) included in your quote?

Our PA and lighting system is included in your quote. We usually require a minimum 24ft by 20ft space to perform. However, larger spaces are always a bonus and we have, many times, squeezed into smaller spaces!
