About Jermyn

Music for weddings, bars and parties across the Peak District and Manchester. Disco, soul, funk, house and indie, vinyl or digital.
DJ
Buxton
Public liability insurance of £5 million

Mark Jermyn is a DJ working from Buxton, in the Peak District, under the name Moderate Studio. He plays records. Disco, soul, funk, house and indie, on vinyl or digital, deep enough into each to keep a room moving without falling back on the obvious, with room to go further into jazz, jungle and Balearic when the night wants it. Sets are built from what you want and read on the night, so the plan changes if the room does. Every booking starts with a conversation rather than a fixed set list. Weddings are the bulk of it. That can be one DJ across the whole day, from the ceremony through drinks and the meal to the last record, or just the evening once the formalities are done. Sound, microphones and lighting are included, so there is nothing else to arrange and nobody else to brief. For bars and clubs it is residencies, launches and one-off nights, public sets built for the particular room rather than a set carried from gig to gig. For parties, birthdays, anniversaries and closed-door nights, it is built around who is actually in the room, at a volume that room can still talk over. There is a quieter side as well: vinyl-led Balearic sessions at slower tempos, drawing on disco, downtempo, soul and cosmic records. Good for daytimes, gardens and the early part of a long evening. He is self-contained. A clean, reliable PA can come with the booking, delivered and set up, so a venue without in-house sound is no obstacle. There is also a solar-powered system that runs an entire event off the sun, with no generator and no mains, used for weddings and ceremonies in fields and gardens across the Peak District. He covers the Peak District, Derbyshire, Cheshire and Greater Manchester as standard, and travels further for the right night.

We booked Mark for a private birthday party and he was brilliant from start to finish. The music was perfect all night and kept everyone dancing and grooving right through the evening. Communication beforehand was excellent too. He took the time to chat through the kind of music we liked and really understood the feel we wanted for the party. Friendly, professional and great at reading the room. We’d highly recommend him and would definitely book him again.

Mark DJed at our Flash Duck Race charity event and was absolutely perfect for the day. He played a brilliant mix of music that suited everyone, from families and children during the afternoon through to the adults later on. The music created a great atmosphere without ever taking over the event, and he judged the crowd perfectly throughout the day. Professional, friendly and really easy to work with. We’d happily recommend Moderate Sounds for village events, community events and parties, and would definitely book him again.

Customer questions

What do your clients love most about your performances?

Clients often say they love the mix of great music, a relaxed approach and how I read the room. I take time beforehand to understand the music they want, then build the set around the crowd on the night. The aim is always the same: keep the dancefloor moving without it ever feeling forced or generic.

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

Freight Island - Manchester Wallop - Knutsford Wallop - Didsbury Buxton Brewery Trackside & Taphouse Golden Lion - Todmorden Rileys Taproom - Chorley Islington Mill - Salford Dulcimer - Chorlton Folk - West Didsbury

Which artists have you been most influenced by?

My influences are pretty broad, from DJs like Andrew Weatherall, Gilles Peterson and David Mancuso to artists including Prince, Talking Heads, Chic, Kraftwerk, Massive Attack and A Tribe Called Quest. I’m drawn to people who cross genres and put great music ahead of sticking to one particular sound.

What is the most high profile gig you've performed?

My most high-profile gig was probably a close friend’s wedding. Not because of the size of the event, but because everyone I love was there. It made it one of the most memorable and meaningful sets I’ve ever played, and definitely one of the most nerve-racking!

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

We understand that timings can change. We’re always happy to be flexible and will do our best to accommodate any adjustments to ensure your event runs smoothly. Just keep us informed if plans change in the lead-up to the event.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

No problem. We’re happy to provide background or playlist music through our PA before and between DJ sets at no extra cost. If you’d like DJ-led music to continue after the final set until the venue closes, this can be added for an additional cost.

How much time do you need to set up?

We typically start setting around 1–1.5 hours before the performance start time. Once the PA is in place, we’re happy to provide a complimentary playlist to help set the atmosphere and get your guests ready.

Can I pick the pieces you play from the set list?

Our sets are shaped by experience and what works best on the dancefloor, but we’re always happy to discuss your preferences. We’re more than happy to organise and play songs that are meaningful to you, alongside tracks we know will keep the energy and atmosphere right.

Do you bring all the equipment you need to perform?

Yes. Everything needed is provided, including the decks and a professional PA. If the venue has no in-house sound, that is not a problem.

Can you learn specific pieces before the event?

Send me the tracks you want played, and any you would rather I avoided, and I will build them into the set. If something is hard to get hold of I will tell you rather than promise it. The earlier you send the list the better, though requests on the night are fine too.
