Customer questions

What do your clients love most about your performances?

Clients love the energy, friendly dance calling and the surprisingly full sound from one musician. I make sure everyone can join in, including complete beginners, and keep the dances moving so the floor stays busy. The aim is always a fun, relaxed ceilidh where nobody feels left out.

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

I’ve performed at hundreds of wedding venues across Scotland, including Aberdeen Music Hall, the Beach Ballroom and many leading hotels, castles and country-house venues. I’ve also performed internationally in Norway, Ireland, Japan, Brazil, Germany, Spain, Italy and Latvia.

Which artists have you been most influenced by?

My roots are firmly in traditional Scottish and Irish dance music, with a strong influence from Foster and Allen, Aly Bain & Phil Cunninghman, Jimmy Shand and the classic Scottish dance-band tradition. Over the years I’ve also drawn on folk, ceilidh and contemporary influences to create a lively style that works particularly well for dancing.

What is the most high profile gig you've performed?

One of the highlights was performing in the ceilidh tent at T in the Park on eight occasions. I’ve also played a sell-out show with Iron Broo at Aberdeen Music Hall and was honoured to sing and play accordion at the family funeral of former First Minister Alex Salmond, as well as at weddings and events throughout Scotland and internationally.

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

I’m always happy to be flexible where possible. Small changes to timings are usually no problem, provided I know in advance. If the change is substantial or extends the booking significantly, I’ll discuss any additional cost with you first.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

Yes. I can provide background music through my PA between ceilidh sets at no extra charge. If you wanted it before there may involve extra cost depending on the timing. If you would like a full DJ/disco service after the ceilidh, including lighting and music through to the end of the evening, this can be added to your booking.

How much time do you need to set up?

Usually around 30-45 minutes or less. The One Man Ceilidh Band uses a compact setup, so I can often set up discreetly while other parts of the event are taking place. For very short performances I can also work with an existing PA system where suitable.

Can I pick the pieces you play from the set list?

Absolutely. I’m happy to include favourite tunes and dances where possible. For the ceilidh itself I usually choose the dances to suit the guests, numbers and experience on the floor, while taking any particular requests into account.

Do you bring all the equipment you need to perform?

Yes. I bring the accordion, midi bass and foot percussion setup, microphones, mixing equipment and professional PA required for the performance. I can also provide lighting where appropriate. All I normally need from the venue is suitable space and access to mains power.

Can you learn specific pieces before the event?

Yes, where the tune is suitable for accordion. I’m very happy to learn a special piece for a wedding ceremony, first dance or other important moment. Please give me as much notice as possible. More involved arrangements may carry a small additional charge.
