"They were marvellous, appreciative of the arrangements made for them and were totally professional in their approach to rehearsal as well as to their performance. Their Director, Vaughn Richardson was first rate, thoroughly helpful with the programme and a delightful, enthusiastic leader of this ad hoc choir, which certainly delivered the goods. The organist, too, was terrific and took infinite pains over getting things right on an unfamiliar instrument. They are all to be commended very highly."

FAQs about hiring Choirs in Wales

Take the stress out of hiring musicians with Encore

How many people are in a choir?

The size of a choir can vary widely based on its purpose, the type of music it performs, and the preferences of the director or organiser. Choirs can range from small chamber choirs with just a handful of singers to large choral ensembles with hundreds of members.

What do choirs usually wear?

The attire of a choir often depends on the type of choir, the formality of the performance, and the preferences of the director or organiser. Here are common types of choir attire: Formal Concert Attire: For formal concerts, especially those featuring classical or traditional music, choirs often wear more formal and uniform attire. This may include: For Men: Tuxedos or dark suits, white dress shirts, and black bow ties. For Women: Floor-length gowns, formal blouses with long skirts, or dressy pantsuits. Casual or Contemporary Attire: For more casual performances or those featuring contemporary and popular music, choirs may opt for less formal attire. This can include: For Men: Dress shirts with dress pants or khakis, possibly with matching ties. For Women: Blouses or tops with skirts, smart trousers, or even coordinated dresses. Gospel Choir Attire: Gospel choirs often have a more relaxed and vibrant style, with attire that reflects the energy of the music. This can include: For Men and Women: Colourful and coordinated outfits, often with a cultural or expressive flair. This may include casual or semi-formal wear.

Do choirs take song requests?

Not all choirs take song requests, but some do. Some choirs have a set repertoire of songs that they perform, while others are more open to requests. The choir will need time to arrange and rehearse the song so it's best to make sure you send any requests in advance. There may also be a small fee for the rehearsal time.

Do choirs only sing hymns?

No, not all! Choirs perform a wide variety of music, from traditional folk songs to classical compositions. Here are some of the most common types of music that choirs perform: - Classical music: This includes choral works from the Renaissance, Baroque, Romantic, and modern periods. Some famous examples of classical choral music include Handel's "Hallelujah" chorus, Mozart's "Requiem," and Verdi's "Va, pensiero." - Popular music: This includes songs from a variety of genres, such as pop, rock, and Broadway. Popular choirs often perform songs that are currently popular or that have been covered by other artists. - A cappella music: This is music that is performed without instrumental accompaniment. A cappella choirs often perform traditional folk songs, spirituals, and jazz arrangements. - Church music: This includes hymns, anthems, and motets. Church choirs often perform music that is specifically written for religious services. In addition to these general categories, there are also many other types of music that choirs perform, such as world music, children's music, and music from different cultures.
