David Mitchell describes his guitar playing as “Folk-Classical fingerstyle”, combining these genres to create a beautiful and unique take on some well known pieces and traditional folk tunes as well as performing his own original compositions. Alongside performing solo, David is also one half of West Country folk duo “Mitchell and Vincent” as well as in the “Monkey See Monkey Do Ceilidh Band”. He also enjoys depping with other bands and musicians near and far. In addition to being a talented musician, David trained as a luthier at Newark and Sherwood College and uses a Classical Guitar that he crafted himself. He also plays other stringed instruments as well as whistles and recorders. David has enjoyed performing solo guitar at a range of lovely venues including Downend Folk & Roots, Banbury Folk Club, The Amadeus, Wessex Acoustic Folk Club, Fivehead Folk & Acoustic Music Night, VegFest Bristol, Broadstairs Folk Week as well as many other public and private events. Looking ahead, David is currently working on his much anticipated debut solo album, ‘Contours’, due for release later in 2024. “A virtuoso on the classical guitar” … “an incredible talent” … “Supremely technical and wonderfully fluid, he plays traditional folk tunes and classical pieces with equal ease. Beautiful stuff.” - Downend Folk & Roots Audience quotes: “Such a pleasure to hear David play. What a talent.” “Beautiful tunes beautifully played.” “Fabulous… talented and thoughtful playing!” “A masterclass in guitar playing.” “Fabulous playing and an awesome sound.”

A virtuoso on the classical guitar. A short set of purely instrumental tunes showed off an incredible talent. Folk legend, Ralph McTell, has been heard to wish that he could play like Mitchell and it's easy to see why. Supremely technical and wonderfully fluid, he plays traditional folk tunes and classical pieces with equal ease. Beautiful stuff.

Customer questions

What do your clients love most about your performances?

Clients have appreciated my versatility, reliability, professionalism & level of musicianship which they have noted enhanced their occasion. Thoughtfully curated sets featuring sensitive arrangements of traditional & modern pieces to complement each occasion; romantic numbers, captivating concert pieces, tunes for dancing or gentle background music.

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

I have enjoyed performing at a wide range of venues, inside and out; from stately houses to folk clubs, arts centres, hotels, churches, theatres, village halls, private residences, formal gardens, breweries, festival stages and more. Some of my performance locations include: Forde Abbey, Thorncombe Church, The Amadeus (London) & Harbour Brewing Co.

Which artists have you been most influenced by?

Clive Carroll, Tony McManus, Tim Edey, Julian Bream, Michael Raven and Rodrigo y Gabriela, Ed Boyd & Anna Massie.

What is the most high profile gig you've performed?

At Downend Folk & Roots, before well renowned folk musicians Nancy Kerr and James Fagan took to the stage. It was a great experience performing to such an appreciative audience at this prestigious event. However some of the most rewarding performances are those where I've had the honour of playing at very special and personal moments in people's lives.

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

I will try to accommodate changes in timings where ever I can. Please do give me as much notice of potential changes as possible.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

I do not currently offer this service.

How much time do you need to set up?

I can be set up and ready to perform in 30 to 60 minutes.

Can I pick the pieces you play from the set list?

I am happy to discuss any tunes from my repertoire that you would like played at particular points during the event and make suggestions of what I find works well.

Do you bring all the equipment you need to perform?

Yes, I bring everything that I require to perform. It is useful to know if there will be power sockets available to me to enable me to use an amp or full PA. If not, I can perform acoustically or with a smaller battery amp.

Can you learn specific pieces before the event?

Please feel free to ask if there's a specific tune that you would like me to play that isn't already on my list, I may already even know it! If it's a new piece to me I'm happy to discuss it with you and learn it for you if I feel that it fits well with my style of playing. There is a fee of £40 for this service to take into account rehearsal time etc.
