A winner of many national and international awards, Latvian-born Vilhelms Patriks Skabardis is a solo, orchestral and ensemble percussionist and a composer. He started his music education in Latvia before continuing at the Purcell School of Music thanks to a scholarship from the Government’s Music and Dance Scheme and support from the School benefactors. At present, he is looking forward to starting his studies at the Royal College of Music in September. He is the winner of the International Southern Percussion Competition 2016 for tuned percussion in the 18 and under category having already won this title in the 16 and under category in 2014, which allowed him to participate in the Royal Opera House Family Sunday Event and a masterclass with Rachel Gledhill, the Principal Percussionist of the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House. In 2007, when he was just 10 years old, he performed Verdi’s Rataplan on small drum at the Latvian National Opera with Chief Guest Conductor Gintaras Rinkevičius and choir. He won First Prize for marimba performance in the 2 nd International Competition Olimpo Musicale (Prienai, Lithuania) in 2008. In 2009, Patriks won Second Prize in the International Competition for Percussion Instruments PENDIM in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, along with First Prize for marimba and snare drum in the International Competition for Young Musicians in Sigulda, Latvia. In 2010, he won Third Prize (Bronze Nutcracker) in the 11 th International Television Contest for Young Musicians The Nutcracker (Moscow, Russia) and participated in the 7 th International Festival Moscow Meets Friends organised by the Vladimir Spivakov International Charity Foundation (Moscow, Russia). In 2011, Patriks was awarded Second Prize in The Reuter Foundation All-Latvian New Talent Competition (Riga, Latvia). At the age of 14, Patriks won First Prize in marimba category in Fermo Italy Percussion Competition 2012 (Fermo, Italy). In 2015, he participated in a unique IMPULSE Outreach Programme travelling to Norfolk to run community outreach projects in primary schools and give community concerts.
