About Tom Cayton

I'm here to have fun performing for other music lovers. I play all sorts from the last 60 years, covers, originals, mash-ups and requests.
Singing guitarist

I love playing music, engaging with the crowd and having a laugh with performances. I do a bit of everything, rock, pop, punk, acoustic, covers, mash-ups, originals, and covers all decades from the last 60 years. Having played guitar for over 20 years now, I've got plenty of performing experience and I've played in venues of all sizes. I've also got a degree in music from the University of Chichester, where I got plenty more performing experience. I've enjoyed playing small shows, just myself and the crowd singing along and I've played shows with artists like Beans On Toast in packed venues. I also play with two bands, one as a lead guitarist and backing vocals and the other as the frontman playing lead guitar and singing lead vocals. I play acoustic guitar and electric guitar and have a plethora of pedals, amps and gear for all occasions. I also play mandolin and ukulele so if you want to hear something different, I'd be happy to give it a go. I'm most at home playing on my trusty ovation acoustic guitar with my unique, percussive guitar style, inspired by Newton Faulkner, Ben Howard, John Mayer, Jon Gomm and other incredible guitarists. I take this style and use it to perform popular songs suitable for any event including parties and weddings. I have a full-time job as a software developer but music is one of my passions and performing is a hobby of mine so I've joined Encore with the hope of getting more bookings and doing more of what I love.

Customer questions

What do your clients love most about your performances?

My energy, personality and unique playing style. I've also been complimented on my vocal technique and original mash-ups.

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

I've performed at far too many venues to list here but most notably I've performed at: The Derngate, The Deco, Moulton Theatre, The Black Prince (supporting Beans On Toast), The Half Moon in Putney (famous for hosting U2, Kate Bush, The Rolling Stones, The Who and more), The Roadmender, Northampton Festival, Wellingborough Festival and The Picturedrome.

Which artists have you been most influenced by?

Too many to mention. I'm currently listening to Lawrence as I type this (an American Jazz/Funk band who deserve much more attention) but my main vocal influences are: Frank Turner Passenger Damien Rice Jack Johnson Jason Mraz Muse And my guitar influences are: Newton Faulkner John Mayer Joe Robinson Tommy Emmanuel Green Day Muse

What is the most high profile gig you've performed?

Either the time I supported Beans On Toast at the Black Prince in Northampton or when I played at an upcoming artists night at the Half Moon in Putney. The Half Moon is famous for hosting many of the biggest artists of all time including the Rolling Stones, U2, Kate Bush and The Who so it was an honour to be asked to play there.

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

I'm happy to be flexible and if I'm able to accommodate the changes, I will. Just let me know what you need.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

Of course. I'm not much of a DJ but I'm a pro with playing Spotify playlists on my phone! If you've got a specific playlist or something, I'd be happy to put this on.

How much time do you need to set up?

I can get set up in about 15 minutes but ideally, 30-60 minutes is preferred to ensure I've got time to sound check and make it a great night.

Can I pick the songs you play from the set list?

Feel free. I do put a lot of work in organising my set lists to try to make the songs flow together but if there are requests or particular songs you want to hear at particular times, that can be arranged.

Do you bring all the equipment you need to perform?

I do. If you've got the gear already set up at the venue, I'm happy to discuss a discount (as it saves me a lot of time and effort) but otherwise, everything that is necessary for me to play the gig is included in the costs.

Can you learn song requests before the event?

I'm happy to take up to three requests before the date to ensure I've got time to get it sounding good. I can learn more than three but I do charge for this depending on how many songs you'd like. Alternatively, I'm can take requests whilst performing but I can't promise I'll know the song or do good job of it (though it's always funny when I do mess up).
