About The Shimmy Grand Ceilidh Band

Fusing traditional ceilidh with pop grooves. Modern, energetic, and quintessentially Scottish!
Ceilidh band
Glasgow
Public liability insurance of £5 million

Shimmy Grand promises to bring a level of sophistication, professionalism, and high energy entertainment to your event. Our unique arrangements consist of traditional tunes perfectly complemented with grooves and quotes from contemporary pop music. Named as an homage to Sir Jimmy Shand Snr, the Shimmy Grand Ceilidh Band was formed in 2011 with the intention of bringing the traditional ceilidh into the 21st Century. Their musical style offers two very different approaches: a traditional ceilidh sound and, in complete contrast, unique arrangements of the traditional melodies complemented with grooves and quotes from contemporary pop music. They regularly switch between both sounds for added enjoyment. As well as the well-known dances, they also offer modern ceilidh dances for those keen to try something new. Overview: • 3-piece modern ceilidh band. • Perfect balance between traditional and modern music. • Repertoire comprises traditional dances, modern dances, line dances, party games, and more. • DJ option available. •The band is based in the central belt of Scotland and is willing to travel for events. Booking Details: A standard booking with Shimmy Grand includes a four-hour set with one break of around 30 minutes, typically during the buffet. If you require a longer performance, it can be arranged at an additional cost. The timings are at the discretion of the client, and an optional DJ set is included with every booking. Meet the Band: • Gisela Hans Hailing from Cape Town, South Africa, Gisela began her violin journey at a tender age of 4. Throughout her education, her passion and skill for the violin grew exponentially. She was awarded a prestigious scholarship from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music to study at the RSAMD in Glasgow, graduating in 2004 with a BMus (Hons). During her tenure at RSAMD, she was invited by the renowned Scottish band, Belle and Sebastian, for a session player role. This association took her to perform across the globe. Notably, she has played at festivals like Glastonbury (UK), Fuji Festival (Japan), and Benicassim (Spain). She even secured a central role in the music video for the single ‘Wrapped Up In Books’ and had the honour of performing with the legendary Brian Wilson from the Beach Boys. Currently, she tutors at North Ayrshire Music Service, and is an integral part of the multi award-winning Wedding String Quartet, Capella. • Gregor Blamey As the accordion and piano player, Gregor is the musical backbone of Shimmy Grand. His inventive arrangements are pivotal to the band's unique resonance. Gregor began his piano journey at seven. Post his BA Honours degree from the Senior Department of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in 2003, he delved into jazz piano at St Andrew’s University. His vast experience includes being a pianist with the Scottish Tango Ensemble, a collaborative artist with Scots Fiddler Alastair Savage, and solo performances across Scotland for various events. His deep-rooted connection to Sir Jimmy Shand Snr, a family friend, has kept his passion for Scottish dance music alive. Apart from Shimmy Grand, he's associated with the Pacific Wedding Band and holds the title of Band Sergeant Major of the Highland Band of the Royal Regiment of Scotland. He also teaches piano and is associated with Falkirk Council and Dollar Academy. • Gerry Sludden Gerry, the band’s percussionist, excels with the cajon and drums. Additionally, he takes on the role of DJ, compere, and ceilidh dance caller, ensuring everyone is well-guided with his casual and witty approach. His musical genesis began in the brass band world, leading him to the Highland Band of the Royal Regiment of Scotland, where he performed internationally. His fascination for world percussion drew him to the cajon. Collaborating with Gregor, the duo began arranging for a ceilidh band with the cajon, culminating in the formation of Shimmy Grand in 2011. By day, Gerry is a Design and Technology teacher and crafts the Cajons he plays, optimizing the sound based on the wood type. Book Us Now! Gerry, Gregor and Gisela were absolutely amazing at our wedding! Thanks to Gerry’s instruction and encouragement, every single guest got up to dance throughout the night, from ages 8-90 and guests with disabilities all were able to enjoy a cracking ceilidh. The sound was immense and unique, the dances were a mix of classic and hilarious and the band even surprised us by playing an arrangement of my aisle walk song as a waltz which was a very special moment. We had a short DJ set too which was enjoyed by all. They were also very professional, arriving and setting up discreetly and efficiently and keeping the evening running. Even the venue which regularly hosts ceilidhs commented on the calibre of the band. I can’t wait to attend another Shimmy Grand ceilidh!

Customer questions

Can you perform covers?

We play traditional Scottish tunes and overlay these with grooves and quotes from modern pop and rock music. You'll have a great time ceilidh dancing and trying to figure out what the quotes are.

Do you have different line-up options?

We almost always perform as a trio: Violin; Piano/Accordion; Percussion/Ceilidh Caller.

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

We try to be as flexible as possible to ensure your event runs as smoothly as possible.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

Absolutely. We also offer a DJ service. You can split up the night however you'd like between ceilidh, background music and a DJ set.

How much time do you need to set up?

We take 1 hour to set up and sound check. As soon as the PA system is set up we provide background music to help create the perfect atmosphere for your event.

Do you provide a caller?

Yes. Gerry is an excellent ceilidh caller and loves getting in amongst the dancers to guide them. If the dancers know what they're doing, he won't waste valuable dancing time and we'll crack on!

Can I pick the songs you play from the set list?

We try to have a good mix of couples dances and set dances. We certainly take requests from the dance floor. We also make sure all the energetic ceilidh dances aren't back to back. For the DJ set, we take as many requests as you want.

Is all of the equipment (e.g. PA) included in your quote?

Yes. We have a professional PA and lighting system.

Can you learn song requests before the event?

If requested, we can try to make our own Scottish version of your chosen first dance, played on violin and piano/accordion. We can also play any requests or playlists through our PA system.
