About The Folly Brothers

Country music band with foot-stompin' American & bluegrass sounds. Popular songs with a bluegrass feel, plus original material.
Country band
Leamington Spa
Public liability insurance of £5 million

Top UK Bluegrass/Americana band The Folly Brothers began in Warwickshire, England, when brothers Mark and Jonny Roden started playing in pubs and clubs in and around their stomping ground, Leamington Spa. Inspired by outlaw country legends such as Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark, their blend of rollicking bluegrass and introspective lyrics quickly became a huge success in their hometown. Double bass player Wes Stanton soon stepped forward and they enjoyed continuing success as a trio, going down a storm on the festival circuit with slots at Black Deer and renowned folk venue The Green Note. A brutally honest blend of smoking hot bluegrass and Americana, their style delves into traditional outlaw country music with an unmistakably modern twang. But it’s their live performance that sets this band apart from the rest. They are renowned for whipping up a frenzy at every gig they play, often moving into the crowd to play songs with the audience dancing around them. Fierce banjo chops and rapid slap-double-bass are the backdrop for Mark and Jonny’s harmonies, and they are now often accompanied with melodic solos on mandolin from Benji Kirkpatrick or Mike Giverin, and fiddle from Sam Barrett. When the coronavirus pandemic hit in 2019, it meant that a whole year of shows were rescheduled or cancelled. During lockdown, they began writing new material to bring to festival stages all across the UK, focusing on harmonies and exploring their sound. The band is in high demand for festivals and private events throughout the UK and Europe, so please ask to book well in advance. Lineup: MARK RODEN | Acoustic Guitar, Vocals JONNY RODEN | Banjo, Guitar, Vocals WES STANTON | Double Bass, Vocals BENJI KIRKPATRICK | Mandolin, Bouzouki MIKE GIVERIN | Mandolin SAM BARRETT | Fiddle

They played our ruby wedding do in a pub and were incredible. What brilliant musicians and really great guys. Their songs and personalities really shone and every single one of our guests said, "what an amazing band. Where on earth did you find them?" I think I danced almost all of their 2 sets which I never thought I could do so it just tells you how inclusive and how catchy the tunes were. Many of our guests said the absolute highlight of the evening was when they left the stage and played acoustic numbers within the crowd. I must say it was so wonderful to be up close and personal with such great players and singers and the cosy and fun atmosphere created had everyone singing along. I'm trying to think of an excuse to hire this band again so if you do have an event coming up, do yourselves a favour and get this band. PS a special thanks to Wes for his great help and great chats.

I stumbled upon The Folly Brothers in January this year, when trying to hunt down a final decent act to complete my line up for the Crick Boat Show Music Festival 2024, which takes place in May - I really felt like I was running out of time and would have to settle for one of the many average acts that you get approached by when booking music for a music festival. After watching a couple of You Tube clips, I knew immediately that here was an act that not only passed my fairly strict musical / musician quality threshold, but who were also going to be a helluva lot of fun! 😀 I had never really come across a Bluegrass style act who appeared to be both as positively upbeat and a full on proper laugh. Nevertheless, as their show day afternoon arrived I had a familiar wobble when booking an act for the first time: What if they're not as good as I thought, maybe I got it wrong and they're just average....😟😟😥😰 Fortunately my instincts were good and they delivered two amazing sets - one afternoon and one evening - both pitched perfectly to suit the slot - the former slightly more down-tempo and the latter raising the roof, getting the crowd properly geared up for the headline act and making me laugh throughout. In addition they were both really nice to deal with and super professional in their approach - we had them set up and line checked in no time at all for the first set. I will absolutely be booking them again, and will probably even break my almost golden rule of not having any act on 2 consecutive years… Highly recommend anyone interested in Bluegrass style / Americana type bizniz to check them or get them booked.
