About Sophie Taylor

Classical, Jazz or Pop - Sophie can do it all! A PGCE-certified singing, cello and piano teacher, currently working for Herts Music Service
Singer (mezzo soprano)
Welwyn Garden City
Public liability insurance of £10 million

After teaching in Secondary schools for a few years, I've decided it's time for a change of scenery! I'm a classically trained singer with ABRSM Grades in singing, cello and piano, and am happy to be hired as a soloist or to work with other musicians of your choosing. As most of my vocal training has been in Classical music, I specialise in Baroque and Classical era opera arias, Romantic era art songs, and can sing Contemporary Classical pieces as I have perfect pitch. Other genres in my vocal repertoire include Jazz, Musical Theatre and Pop, and I can even do covers of your favourite songs in a different style upon request. As I speak Spanish, French and conversational Korean, I can learn and perform songs other languages at request (as long as I'm given enough time to learn them!). In terms of cello and piano, however, it's just a matter of sending me the list of pieces long enough before your event for me to learn them. I can even do covers of movie, videogame and TV themes if you want! I'm still in the process of getting new headshots, and my Public Liability Insurance is being organised by the Independant Society of Musicians. Watch this space!

Sophie sang at our wedding. We asked her to choose the programme and she chose a perfect combination of songs for us. Her lovely voice and performance was thoroughly enjoyed by all. In addition she was well prepared and easy to work with. I am delighted to recommend her.

Sophie sang at my mother's funeral. She picked a tasteful, yet emotional song and moved us to tears. Thank you, Sophie.

Customer questions

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

I understand things can change or go wrong at the last minute. If possible, I ask for at least 24 hours' notice for any major changes such as venue, date or time. Please just let me know of any changes as soon as possible.

How much time do you need to set up?

Depending on the venue, I usually only need 30 minutes to set up before a performance. If using a venue's PA system, however, I would appreciate up to 1 hour to get used to everything and learn the controls.

Can I pick the pieces you play from the set list?

Absolutely! During our consultation we will discuss which songs/pieces you would like me to perform. If there are any songs that you cannot see on my songlist that you would like to hear, please let me know during the consultation. I am open to every genre!

Do you bring all the equipment you need to perform?

Yes, however I would like to know if a venue has their own sound system, piano or PAT testing requirements. I like to use in-house PA systems whenever possible, but can perform acoustically or using my own amplifiers.

Can you learn specific pieces before the event?

Yes, absolutely, as long as I am given sufficient notice. If you wish me to sing something in a foreign language, however, I ask for at least a month's notice and there is an extra £10 fee.
