Simone Maurer is a young Queensland flautist aspiring for a performance and music research career. Although she is primarily trained in classical and orchestral flute repertoire, Simone has also studied and performed many contemporary works by established and upcoming composers.
Simone is currently completing a Master of Philosophy in Music Studies specialising in performance at the University of Cambridge under the supervision of Prof. John Rink and Prof. Sarah Hawkins. She also receives flute training with Michael Cox at the Royal Academy of Music, London.
In 2013, Simone graduated from the Griffith University Queensland Conservatorium of Music (Brisbane) with a Bachelor of Music majoring in Advanced classical flute performance with Class I Honours, the Griffith University Medal for academic excellence, and the Music Medal for outstanding achievement in her Bachelor degree. She is also a Griffith Honours College scholar and Golden Key International Honours Society member. During her degree, Simone completed a 3 month flute internship with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. She has performed with the Australian Youth Orchestra (Young Symphonists and National Music Camp), Queensland Youth Symphony, Second Queensland Youth Orchestra, the Queensland Bach Society, and numerous Queensland Conservatorium ensembles. Simone particularly enjoyed performing with her woodwind trio Aurora Australis, joined by Luke Carbon (clarinet) and Steph Dixon (oboe). In 2013, they recorded Malcolm Arnold's 'Divertimento Op. 37' for 4MBS Classic FM radio (Brisbane).
Simone often takes part in competitions and has recently won: Queensland Flute Guild James Carson Competition (2012), Southeast Queensland Concerto Competition (2012), 4MBS Chamber Music Prize (2012), Jim Massie Memorial Prize (2013), and Queensland Conservatorium Owen Fletcher Postgraduate Prize (2013).
Simone values arts management and being a part of community music groups. From 2012-2013 she was the Queensland Flute Guild 'university liaison and researcher' committee member. She was Volunteer Co-ordinator for the Griffith University Queensland Conservatorium Encounters: India Festival, and the International Music Council's 5th International World Forum on Music.
