Pianist
Birmingham

Richard is a freelance pianist living in Birmingham in the U.K. Working mainly in the areas of jazz and pop, he also has experience in many other styles and formats. After a couple of years as an accompanist for ballet classes, he spent eight years up until the end of 2015 working at sea as an ensemble pianist on various cruise lines including over five years with the most famous ocean liners in the world - Cunard. His playing career has provided opportunities to play and work with artists including Jamie Cullum, Lesley Garrett, Georgie Fame and John and Jaqui Dankworth. The time at sea gave invaluable experience in leading ensembles from the piano as well as affording the chance to hone his skills as a soloist and trio player. Richard has a few recording credits including his own tracks on this site and a recent recording accompanying classical crossover flautist Clare Langan. He has also been involved with other recordings and live BBC radio broadcasts as well as tours overseas including an incredible opportunity in 2003 to perform at the prestigious I.A.J.E conference in Toronto in front of one of his heroes, jazz legend Oscar Peterson, and as an opening act for the Yellow Jackets. He is indebted to the wonderful organisation M.Y.J.O (Midland Youth Jazz Orchestra) under the direction of Dr. John Ruddick M.B.E for many of these opportunites and also for his training in discipline and preparation for a professional life in music, along with a love for playing big band music. Another big musical love is collaborating with creative musicians, making music that's both a joy to play and to listen to.
