Philip started his studies at the Royal Northern College of Music where he had the opportunity to record a premiere of Edwin Roxburgh’s oboe trio – Shadow Play, with the renowned oboist Paul Goodey. During his time at the RNCM Philip won numerous prizes including the Cronshaw Lancaster Prize for Wind, Evelyn Rothwell Oboe Prize and a Henry Wood Scholarship alongside performing various concertos with the schools various orchestras. As a member of award winning ensemble, the Atéa Quintet, Philip has toured extensively around Europe and Asia. The group have tutored at various institutions around the UK including Purcell School, Colchester Institute, and since 2012 have been ensemble in residence at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Chamber music is always at the core of his career and with this, Philip is a tutor on several Wind Ensemble courses including the Malvern Winds, Wind Ensemble Retreat in Yorkshire, Dartington International Festival and The Music Summer School and Festival. With a passion for new music, Philip is also a member of the award winning ‘Riot Ensemble’ whom primary focus is new music which has taken him across the UK around Europe and beyond. Philip has recently worked with orchestras across Europe such as the Lapland Chamber Orchestra (on contract Spring/Summer 2021), Orchestra of Opera North, Irish National Symphony Orchestra, RTÉ Concert Orchestra, Turku Philharmonic (contracted 2024), Liverpool Philhamonic, Hallé Orchestra, Birmingham Contemporary Music Ensemble, Den Fynske Opera in Denmark and London Mozart Players.
