About Matthew James Banks

Singer / Songwriter & Covers Artist from Bristol, UK with 10+ years experience in live performance!
Singer
Bristol
Public liability insurance of £2 million

Matthew James Banks is a singer-songwriter / covers artist from Cambridge currently living in Bristol. A firm believer in the power and joy of live performance, he puts puts 110% into every gig he does which has given him quite the reputation in Bristol's up and coming acoustic scene. With incredibly soulful vocals, tender guitar playing and an on stage confidence that is hard to find nowadays, Matt's talent truly speaks for itself. He spent his younger years cutting his teeth on the busking circuit in his hometown, learning how to handle a crowd through late night performances to partygoers stumbling out of nightclubs in Cambridge city centre. Since moving to the South West in 2015 to start a course in Commercial Music at Bath Spa University he has performed in most of Bath / Bristol’s top venues; Komedia, Thekla, The Louisiana, Rough Trade and Moles to name a few. He has also landed support slots for notable acts such as Brothers Moving and Carl Barat & The Jackals. Matt’s influences range from classic British rock bands like Oasis, The Stone Roses & The Beatles to contemporary folk in the realm of Bon Iver and Passenger. He also loves seminal soul and reggae singers such as Marvin Gaye and Bob Marley. His knowledge of popular covers is wide and varied from back the busking days and needing to always have another song up your sleeve to get the crowd going. He has released three solo EP’s, and most recently a 10 track album titled "Young Man" which includes spoken . word poetry alongside his original songs. His second album is currently in the process of being recorded and is due for release early 2023. From small pubs to big stages to large wedding venues, Matt has seen all there is to see in his ten year career and always has something to offer. Why not give him a try?

Customer questions

What do your clients love most about your performances?

I've been told my vocals are very soothing and soulful which is a lovely compliment to hear. I've also been praised for my wide range of knowledge when it comes to song choices and how to get the party going!

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

I've performed all over the UK and abroad in France, Thailand and Croatia during my 10+ years performing.

Which artists have you been most influenced by?

A lot of classic singer songwriters such as Neil Young, Alex Turner and Bob Dylan, but also a lot of classic rock and indie music like The Beatles, The Jam and The Stones Roses.

What is the most high profile gig you've performed?

I opened for Carl Barat of The Libertines at Thekla in Bristol back when in 2017 which was an amazing experience. I've also opened for Brothers Moving, The Scruff, Novatines in various different venues across Bristol and Bath and have headlined sell out shows in London with my band.

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

I will always try my best to be flexible to help ensure your event runs as smoothly as possible. If timings change slightly in the run up to the event just let me know.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

Absolutely. This is a really popular request and I actually offer this service for free. If you'd like a DJ service via my PA after the final set until the venue closes, I provide this for an additional £150.

How much time do you need to set up?

Usually I can set up within 30 - 40 minutes, but I always endeavour to arrive with at least an hour before my start time to say hello.

Can I pick the pieces you play from the set list?

My set lists are crafted from countless performances and learning what works best to ensure guests dance and have an amazing time. However, I'm definitely happy to chat through and make sure we find what works for your event.

Do you bring all the equipment you need to perform?

Yes, absolutely! I provide all the necessary equipment for my performance.

Can you learn specific pieces before the event?

If a song isn't included in my song list there may still be a chance we already know it. If there is a special song you'd like me to learn I am happy to do this for you. There is a fee of £50 for this service to take into account rehearsal times etc.
