Luiz de Campos

I was born in São Paulo, Brazil, and moved to the United Kingdom at the age of five. I began studying as a postgraduate at the Royal Academy of Music in 2019, supported by the Drapers’ Company Music Scholarship, with Christopher Cowie and Ian Hardwick, having previously studied there as an undergraduate with Celia Nicklin. Since joining the Academy, I have performed with many orchestras, including the Royal Academy Symphony Orchestra, Royal Academy Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Central London Chamber Orchestra and the Kohn Foundation Chamber Orchestra, and have worked with renowned conductors, such as Sir Mark Elder, Edward Gardner, John Wilson and Jonathan Lo. Recent concert highlights include performing Bartók’s ‘The Miraculous Mandarin’ and Prokofiev’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ suites, amongst other works, as Principal Oboe of the Royal Academy Symphony Orchestra, and being conducted by James Newton Howard, playing his film scores at the Royal Albert Hall. In May 2019, I also performed as Principal Oboe for the Royal Academy String Orchestra, led by the renowned Doric Quartet, as well as being Principal Oboe of the Kohn Foundation Chamber Orchestra for the ‘Bach The European’ concert series, starting in December 2019. Whilst at the Academy, I have also taken part in masterclasses with Jonathan Kelly, Kai Frömbgen, Christopher Redgate, Tom Blomfield and Domenico Orlando. In 2016, I became Principal Oboe of the King’s College London Symphony Orchestra, and later that year I performed ‘Bacchus’, from Britten’s Six Metamorphoses after Ovid, in an English Oboe Chamber Music concert at the Academy. In December 2018, I played the Mozart Oboe Concerto with the St Bartholomew Chamber Orchestra, and in March 2019, I performed the Strauss Oboe Concerto with the King’s College London Symphony Orchestra, having won the orchestra’s Concerto Competition in 2018. Later that year, I participated in an orchestral collaboration with The Juilliard School, which featured Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, in two concerts in Snape Maltings and at the BBC Proms.
