Biography - Katharine Ley, Cellist British Cellist, Katharine Ley graduated from the Royal Northern College of Music with a First Class Bachelor of Music with Honours and is now studying privately with world-renowned Cellist Raphael Wallfisch in London. Katharine presently lives in North Lincolnshire and freelances professionally in the UK. Katharine’s earlier musical education was at the Royal Birmingham Junior Conservatoire where she led the Chamber and Symphony Orchestras. At the age of 16, Katharine advanced her studies with Soloist Felix Schmidt, Cello Professor of the Royal Academy of Music while simultaneously playing in the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. This was extremely progressive for Katharine’s Cello playing prior to entering the Royal Northern College of Music. As a Soloist, Katharine has performed internationally in many concerts and public masterclasses. Some highlights include performing in masterclasses to Natasha Brofsky (Juilliard), Leonard Elschenbroich, Rebecca Gilliver (Principal Cello of the LSO), Julian Lloyd Webber, Miklos Perenyi, Hannah Roberts and Troels Svane (Berlin). Katharine has much Orchestral experience having participated in projects, rehearsals and concerts with orchestras such as the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Also during her youth Katharine won seats in numerous national youth orchestras. This meant by the age of 18 Katharine had already performed at all the major concert venues in the UK including the Royal Albert Hall at the BBC Proms. More recently, Katharine undertook a postgraduate fellowship with the San Francisco Academy Orchestra, gaining 1:1 mentorship from Amos Yang, Assistant Principal Cello of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. Katharine plays on a Betts School Cello (c. 1790) paired with a John Clutterbuck bow. Please do not distribute without first seeking permission. Thanks.

Katharine is beyond amazing!! She made my book launch (a 2 hour evening event) such a special event, for both me and my guests. She was such a joy to work with from start to finish. She brought parts of the book to life with her music, and hearing my requested songs choked me up a little (a lot!!) It was magical. Thank you Katharine! :)

Katherine was an utter delight to work with from start to finish. We are lucky enough to have Katherine perform at our wedding ceremony and drinks reception. She was the perfect choice and we could not have been happier! Katherine sounds fantastic and played beautiful renditions of our own song choices, which really personalised our day. Katherine’s repertoire is vast and our guests all commented on how wonderful she sounded, in addition to what brilliant song choices she’d put together for our day. I’d 100% recommend Katherine for any event!

Katharine played a wonderful Cello solo at our mother's funeral. It was so comforting to hear her playing a cherished piece of Music with such warmth. A faultless performance from a true professional.
