Birmingham based Violinist

Hi, I am Karel Vrbík a violin player in his fourth year at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire currently studying with professor Susanne Stanzeleit and Pavel Fischer. I grew up in Prague, Czech Republic and started attending a music school to learn the violin when I was 3 years old. I studied with professor Jiří Janoušek who has been my mentor and has led me to win and participate in violin competitions from a young age. The highlights of my accomplishments are a 1st prize for solo violin at the 13th National Violin Competition in the City of Plzenec, Czech Republic and a 1st prize at the Concerto Bohemia competition in 2012 in the category of ensembles, this included an invaluable experience of making a recording for the competition. So far I have been awarded six 1st prizes and five 2nd prizes at various competitions. I have been fortunate enough to be given tuition and masterclasses by Leoš Čepický (Head of Violin at the Academy of Music in Prague) whilst taking part in an International Music Course of Nové Hrady two years in a row. Since then I have gone on to study with him on many other occasions such as on the International Music Courses in Prague organised by Jan B. Špidlen and he continues to be my inspiration to this day. I have been awarded a scholarship to study violin performance (BMus) at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire where I study under the International Chair of Violin Oliver Wille, professor Susanne Stanzeleit and Pavel Fischer. I have also received masterclasses from Tamsin Waley-Cohen and chamber music coaching from names such as Robin Ireland, Jane Salmon, William Coleman and Oliver Wille. I have had the privilege to be given coaching from the internationally acclaimed Kuss Quartet, Schubert Ensemble, Gildas Quartet, Heath Quartet and others. My orchestral and chamber music experience includes a variety of ensembles and is wide spread across musical styles ranging from Baroque to Contemporary and Popular. Highlights have to be being under the baton of conductors such as Michael Seal, Barry Wordsworth and Sir Richard Armstrong whilst playing in the RBC Symphony Orchestra as a co-principal second violin. I have also recently enjoyed working with the Welsh National Opera and the Orchestra of the Swan during their visits to Birmingham. I am an avid teacher and has had a variety of students. With more than three years of experience preparing his students for ABRSM examinations all the way to auditions for the highest level of playing. His expertise ranges from beginners to a student who secured offers from the top UK conservatoires through her auditions. For the past two years he has been part of the Melody group where he is committed to instrumental teaching for people with learning disabilities. I believe in building a solid foundation based on the understanding of technique and expanding musicianship skills. My focus is developing the students’ technique and musicianship alongside their performance skills and most importantly enjoyment through playing! I have experience with systems of learning and maintaining healthy and appropriate posture whilst playing. These include Alexander technique and the Feldenkrais Method. I am DBS checked and belong to the Musicians' Union which covers me for public liability insurance.
