About Jools

A uniquely uplifting wedding experience!
Violinist
Coventry
Public liability insurance of £10 million

Jools is a acclaimed and versatile violinist hailing from Warwickshire, England, with a passion for performing music in the genres of pop, classical, folk and jazz. With over three decades of professional experience, Jools has become a sought-after name in the wedding music scene, known for his diverse repertoire of wedding favourites and lesser-known classics. Jools' musical journey began at the young age of six when he first picked up the violin. He studied privately under the tutelage of renowned national and international classical and bluegrass violinists, honing his skills and developing his unique style of playing, also drawing from his skill as a guitarist. His talent and dedication to his craft quickly gained recognition, leading him to perform on notable television shows such as the X-Factor and the Gadget Show. Apart from his solo performances at weddings, Jools also excels in other musical genres. Under the name Tile Hill Billy, he captivates audiences with his folk and bluegrass instrumental tunes, showcasing his versatility as a musician. As a current member of a distinguished tribute band to the music of Shania Twain, he performs fiddle and guitar in theatres and festivals up and down the country, whilst as a part of an acoustic Americana trio, he has been invited to perform on stages such as at the National Exhibition Centre and Silverstone Race track. Jools' talent extends beyond the wedding and Americana music scenes. He has also worked in a Country and Western band alongside bassist Horace Panter of the Specials, and his 2023 collaboration with independent artist Craig Gould resulted in a Top 20 album in both the official UK Americana, Indie, and Folk charts. He has also lent his skills to orchestras such as the Birmingham Philharmonic Orchestra, showcasing his versatility and proficiency as a violinist. In addition to these performances, Jools brings joy and comfort to the residents of Care Homes with his soulful violin performances, spreading the power of music to those unable to travel to external venues. Jools is also an experienced recording artist, having appeared on albums by notable bands and musicians like Wes Finch, The Mechanicals Band, and Robert Cannon. With his rich musical background, extensive experience in various genres, and unwavering passion for the violin, Jools continues to captivate audiences with his soulful performances, making weddings and events truly memorable. His mellow piano backing tracks and wide-ranging repertoire make him a sought-after choice for couples looking to add a touch of elegance and sophistication to their special day.

Jools played acoustically for our Volunteer Garden party. The music was beautiful and gave a great atmosphere to the evening. We really enjoyed hearing songs we knew in a different way and lots of people commented on how much they enjoyed the music. Jools was punctual and lovely. I would definitely recommend him.

Jools came at very short notice to play first violin in our orchestra. He was a very competent player (despite having very little notice of the pieces to be played). He was very pleasant and chatty with everyone. Very professional.

I just wanted to say a MASSIVE ‘Thank You’ you were amazing. We had so many positive comments about you. Really sorry we didn’t get to talk. Them two hours of arriving at the venue were crazy. Everyone wanted photos. I was listening though and you sounded amazing. Thank you for doing the wedding at short notice, we couldn’t of asked for a better violinist. Thank you for the bottom of our hearts

Jools composed and remotely recorded violin sections for 3 of my tracks: Just For a Day; Roman 7; Boneyard. The tracks have an American influence but would fall under the indie genre. Essentially, the remit for Jools was to 'bulk them out' with strings. Although I had not actually met Jools in person (and still haven't), he was extremely responsive when communicating via email and therefore didn't need to meet. Before agreeing, he encouraged me to listen to his back catalogue - I was impressed with the breadth and depth of genres that Jools had worked with and I was pleased to learn he had worked with a couple of acquaintances of mine- namely The Birmingham Philharmonic Orchestra and Chris Tye. Listening to his work, I was impressed by his knack around texturising songs- in my experience, strings can sometimes feel isolated from the rest of the instrumentation and I am aware that some string players find this aspect of composition challenging. Throughout the process, Jools ensured he had a secure understanding around my expectations. This brought about discussion around dynamics, chord progression technique (tremolo, tied sections etc). Although he was happy to read from transcript, I felt that his take on composition would be much better than mine, so he kindly agreed to compose the parts himself. After recording the first version, he sent me recordings via YouTube- he even went to the trouble of including a running text commentary of his thoughts within the video itself. This meant that I could give better feedback and bounce off his ideas. I was especially amazed by the turnaround (3 days to complete the process) as I had not set any deadlines or ball-park timeframes. Jools' playing is technically perfect and he has an exceptional ear for harmony and dynamics. e.g. He knew not to play for the sake of playing, and when to build to crescendo. He was able to add a range of chords, hooks and new melodies to the song. In Boneyard, the melody in the instrumental chorus ended up becoming the dominant hook- this was totally unplanned. Much like his violin playing, the overall recording quality was very professional. If you are looking for an outstanding string player who is both technical and visionary, Jools would be my number one recommendation.

Customer questions

Do you have different line-up options?

Line up for solo weddings is Violin. There is the option for solo (unaccompanied) violin which can be played acoustically (unamplified) or through a PA system. Alternatively, performances can be played with backing tracks (available only with PA system)

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

I can be flexible with timings to a degree.

How much time do you need to set up?

I would recommend 45 minutes to set up with a PA system. Without a PA system I can be ready inside of 10/15 minutes.

Can I pick the pieces you play from the set list?

If you have favourites from my set list, I am happy to try to include these in my performance.

Do you bring all the equipment you need to perform?

Yes - I bring all my own equipment sufficient to perform. I would require a power source if performing through my PA system. I do not carry lighting, however.

Can you learn specific pieces before the event?

I am happy to look at specific pieces as an addition to my set list. There is a fee of £60 for up to 3x additional pieces. Requests should be made at least 14 days prior to the performance to ensure sufficient time to prepare.
