Jeffrey Armstrong is nineteen years old, was born in Wellington and attended Bridge House school in Franschhoek. Aged six, Jeffrey started violin tuition with Charlene Bogenhagen at the Frank Pietersen Music Centre in Paarl. In 2008 he moved – with his teacher – to the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre in Cape Town, where he became leader of their senior string ensemble. From an early age, Jeffrey has been an active participant in and prize-winner at numerous eisteddfodau in the Western Cape. A year after having started lessons with de Wet, he was selected to perform as soloist with both the Cape Philharmonic and the Johannesburg Philharmonic orchestras. At the beginning of 2013 Jeffrey had the privilege of playing with the Zurich Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Sir Roger Norrington for the duration of their South African tour. Jeffrey was awarded first prize at the Pieter Kooij Competition in August 2013, a year in which he appeared as soloist with both the Kwazulu-Natal Philharmonic and Johannesburg Symphony orchestras. This year he has won both the SACS and ArtsCape National Youth music competitions. He held the position of concertmaster of the Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Orchestra from 2013 to 2015. He was also selected as concertmaster at the South African National Youth Orchestra at their summer course in December 2013. During 2015, Jeffrey performed numerous chamber music recitals with Cape pianist Tertia Visser. In September he moved to England, where he began studies at the Birmingham Conservatoire. He now studies with Pieter Schoeman, concertmaster of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Shortly after he began studies with Pieter, Jeffrey returned to South Africa to compete in the UNISA Grade 8 competition where he received first prize. At the conservatoire, Jeffrey has performed in a variety of chamber music concerts, including a performance with the Thallein contemporary music ensemble, as well as two concerts for the annual Schubert festival. Jeffrey was selected as concertmaster of the Conservatoire’s orchestra for the end-of-term performance in December.
