Janell Yeo is a British musician, educator, and audiovisual artist who started playing the violin aged four. She has performed across the UK and on multiple continents as a solo violinist, singer, chamber musician and musicianship leader, including all the major London concert halls and the Esplanade Theatres on the Bay (Singapore). Since 2007, her talent and dedication have been recognised by awards, bursaries and scholarships across several countries. Being passionate about the power of music at individual, regional and international levels, her performances and arts events have raised tens of thousands for humanitarian causes around the world and won her a 2011 'Champion Volunteer' Diana Award. Janell is also a dedicated educator, receiving a Distinction for her pedagogical Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Music in 2019. As a founding member of the Bloomsbury Quartet, Janell has performed at festivals and concert series across the UK; played live on BBC Radio 3 and at the Wigmore Hall; and positively impacted over a thousand people of all backgrounds through participatory and co-creative projects. 2019/20 saw the Bloomsbury Quartet embark on their first UK tour with 'ReCentred | Elizabeth Maconchy'. Currently a PhD candidate at Goldsmiths University of London, Janell uses filmmaking to explore the intersection between audiovisuality, classical music, and social issues. As a 2017 Vlogstar Challenge finalist, her short films have been screened at BAFTA and Viacom UK HQ.

Customer questions

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

Royal Albert Hall, Barbican Hall, Southbank Centre, Buckingham Palace, Wigmore Hall, St John's Smith Square, Watford Colosseum, Vicarage RoaPainted Hall (Royal Naval College Greenwich), St Albans Abbey, Romsey Abbey, Leicester Museum & Art Gallery, Coventry University...the list goes on, not to mention the festivals and other venues across the UK and abroad!

Which artists have you been most influenced by?

Growing up, Maxim Vengerov was the violinist I dreamed of emulating - although people often compared me to Vanessa Mae! I am inspired by Michael Jackson's & Beyonce's work ethic, innovation, and ability to bring together diverse styles. I admire Nigel Kennedy's fearless, tenacious attitude.

What is the most high profile gig you've performed?

I've had the privilege to play for Prince Charles, two Presidents of Singapore, UK ex-High Commissioner of Burma, Governor of Western Australia, among others! Other highlights: Leading the Violin II section for a sold-out Royal Albert Hall; performing a full evening programme at the Esplanade Concert Hall; and playing at the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Forum.

Do you have different line-up options?

Yes, I can play violin and sing during the same event, and a violin duo is also available. If you'd like a string trio or string quartet, I co-founded the Bloomsbury Quartet in Autumn 2017 - get in touch here or search for us!

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

Let me know ASAP and we will figure something out!

How much time do you need to set up?

I'm usually present at the venue at least 30mins before and after the scheduled event, to setup/packdown and in case of unforeseen delays or circumstances.

Can I pick the pieces you play from the set list?

Yes - if you have preferences for/against a certain piece or song, let me know!

Do you bring all the equipment you need to perform?

Yes, but if the venue has their own equipment available, that would be very useful and helpful to know in advance!

Can you learn specific pieces before the event?

The earlier you can get in touch with me about this, the more likely that it's possible!

Janell pitched her performance just right for a funeral reception and celebration of my mother’s life and spirit! It was sensitive but also entertaining and uplifting, with the perfect mix of light classical and fun jazz standards, including an impromptu and lovely sung rendition of Nature Boy, which came as a surprise! What’s more she had chosen an elegant dress complete with sparkly but discrete Alice band, which really set off the look. The performance seemed flawless, the overall impression, polished and personalised to the family & occasion. Perfect! We’re very happy and won’t hesitate to recommend her to anyone.

…experience the Bloomsbury’s alluring sound… I instantly felt I had a genuine creative connection with the quartet, who are already such sensitive and responsive musicians despite being a relatively new group. During the recording session with the Bloomsburys, I noticed their acute ability to shift effortlessly between discrete stylistic temperaments with a pervading fresh and adventurous attitude.
