Gina Sedman – ‘The Black Girl Hippie’ – is a soulful, charismatic and deeply experienced artist whose music brings together future soul, classic soul and funk, with a distinctive nod to the golden sounds of the 1970s. Originally from California and now based in the UK, Gina has spent 30 years building a career around one simple belief: music should move people. Whether through a powerful vocal, a deep groove or a heartfelt lyric, her aim is always to create a genuine connection with the audience. Gina’s sound is unmistakably her own. Her voice is soulful, powerful and distinctive, with an extraordinary range, while her live performances combine warmth, energy, musicianship and a natural stage presence. Performing with her exceptional live band, Monopoly, she creates a show that feels both authentically rooted in soul and completely contemporary. Her musical journey spans three decades and includes an impressive catalogue of 17 albums and five No.1 singles on the UK Soul Chart. Her work has also brought her into the studio and onto stages alongside some exceptional musicians. Before relocating to the UK, Gina performed live with musicians including drummer Ricky Lawson, known for his work with Roy Ayers Ubiquity and the Yellowjackets, and legendary guitarist Darrell Crooks, whose credits include the Gap Band and Earth, Wind & Fire. Her recording career has continued to attract internationally respected talent. Her hit single ‘Smile’ features keyboardist Kevin Flournoy, whose credits include Chaka Khan, Ronnie Laws and Dionne Warwick, alongside platinum award-winning guitarist Michael J. Calhoun of The Dazz Band. Gina has also worked with The Dazz Band, while her latest album, ‘Who’s Clyde’, features bassist Peewee Hill and Mischiko Hill. Since moving to the UK, Gina has quickly established herself within the jazz, soul and funk scene. She has completed two UK tours, performing to sold-out audiences at respected venues including Pizza Express Live, The Stables, The Bear Club and Temple of Art & Music. She has also performed at Soul Mama and numerous soul all-dayers, building a growing reputation as an exciting and dependable live performer. Festival audiences have experienced Gina’s unique sound at the Luton Soul & Funk Festival and the legendary Bedford River Festival, where she appeared on the Remedy Stage alongside acts including Patrick Forge’s Da Lata. Her music continues to receive strong support from leading broadcasters and tastemakers across the UK, including Jazz FM, Mi-Soul, Starpoint, Solar and Soul Groove. Gina has also performed live on BBC Radio London’s Robert Elms Show, reaching a quarter of a million listeners. For Gina, performing is about far more than simply singing songs.
