Flora Bain is a freelance horn player with a first class Master of Music degree from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and a first class Bachelor of Music degree from the Royal College of Music in London.
She studied with Simon Rayner, Jeffrey Bryant, Timothy Jones, John Ryan, Kira Doherty, Richard Bissill, Angela Barnes, Christopher Parkes, Susan Dent, Jonathan Lipton, Phil Munds, Richard Kennedy and Natural Horn with Roger Montgomery.
In her third year at the RCM, she completed an ERASMUS+ exchange at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen where she studied with Lasse Mauritzen. While studying, she was invited to play 3rd horn with the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Yuri Temirkanov.
In her final year at the RCM, Flora was selected to take part in the ENO Evolve scheme. She took part in the LPO Foyle Future First scheme from 2020-2022.
Flora has had a wide range of professional orchestral freelance experience. She has played with the London Symphony Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Britten Sinfonia, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Opera North Orchestra, the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Royal Opera House Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, The London Philharmonic Orchestra and The Welsh National Opera.
Flora has also enjoyed a wide range of historical performance as a freelancer. She has played with the Hannover Band and the Florelligium Ensemble. Performances with this ensemble have included solo Baroque Horn in Bach's B Minor Mass at Cadogan Hall and in 2019, she played principal Baroque horn on their UK summer tour of all 6 of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos. One of these concerts was recorded live and later broadcast on BBC Radio 3.
