Flora Bain is a horn player in the final year of her Postgraduate degree at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She is a foundation scholar on the Orchestral Artistry Course and is under the tutorage of Richard Bissill, Angela Barnes, Christopher Parkes, Susan Dent, Jonathan Lipton, Phil Munds and Natural Horn with Roger Montgomery. She previously studied with Richard Kennedy.
Flora recently gained a first class Bachelor of Music degree with Honours from the Royal College of Music where she was taught by Simon Rayner, Jeffrey Bryant, Timothy Jones, John Ryan and Kira Doherty.
In her third year at the RCM, she completed an ERASMUS+ exchange at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen. While studying, she was invited to play 3rd horn with the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Yuri Temirkanov.
In her final year at the RCM, Flora was selected to take part in the ENO Evolve scheme, involving regular sit-in's with the orchestra and one to one lessons with the players.
Flora has had a wide range of professional orchestral freelance experience so far. She has played with the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, The London Philharmonic Orchestra and The Welsh National Opera. She is currently on trial for fourth horn at the Orchestra of Opera North and the London Symphony Orchestra.
Flora has also enjoyed a wide range of historical performance as a freelancer. She has played with the Hannover Band and regularly plays with the Florelligium Ensemble. Performances with the ensemble have included solo Baroque Horn in Bach's B Minor Mass at Cadogan Hall and in 2019, she played principal Baroque horn on their UK summer tour of all 6 of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos. One of these concerts was recorded live and later broadcast on BBC Radio 3.
