Angus Bain is a violinist based in London currently taking a year out to prepare for postgraduate studies at conservatoire, having graduated from the University of Cambridge with an integrated Master of Engineering degree. Despite this unusual route to a music career, he has built up extensive experience in performing, particularly orchestral, and recently received offers to study at the RCM, RAM and Guildhall. He started playing the violin at the age of five and obtained grade 8 distinction by thirteen. He was a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain for three years from 2011-2014, reaching the position of no. 3 first violin in his final year. During this time, he played under an array of prestigious conductors, such as Francois Xavier-Roth, Vasily Petrenko and John Wilson, in several of the major concert halls around the UK, including multiple performances at the Royal Albert Hall in the BBC Proms. Whilst at Cambridge, he was the co-leader and subsequently leader of the Cambridge University Musical Society (CUMS) Symphony Orchestra in 2013-15, the co-leader of the Chamber Orchestra in 2016-17, and the leader of the University’s Opera Society orchestra in 2017. He was also in demand as the leader of various student-run ensembles. He performed several solo and chamber recitals around the University and was the recipient of both University and College instrumental awards. As a soloist, he performed the Bruch violin concerto with the Hampton School Orchestra in 2012 and has more recently taken part in various local music festivals, most notably winning the Richmond Festival Concerto Class in 2014 with the first movement of the Sibelius concerto. He was also asked to perform movements of both the Sibelius and Bruch concertos as part of the Cambridge University Musical Society Conducting Competition. Whilst Angus' primary focus is the violin, he is also a keen pianist, having obtained an ABRSM diploma in 2012 and has since enjoyed working on and performing various challenging works both at school and at university. These include Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2 with his school and local youth orchestras and the piano part to the Franck violin and piano sonata for recitals in Cambridge. In addition to performing experience, he teaches both violin and piano privately, and currently has a part-time job as accompanist and piano teacher at Falkner House prep school.
