Dolly James has had an extensive career as a professional vocalist. Her work has included touring, radio and television performances and recording both as a lead vocalist and as a backing vocalist. Born in Brunei of Sri Lankan, Indian and Malaysian descend; she has travelled internationally and nationally performing with known artists in the industry.
From the year 1977 to 1988, there has been a variety of work such as singing at private parties and functions in her native Brunei and later in Singapore at the Mandarin Hotel before working in the U.K. She worked with cabaret bands in Wales and in the West Midlands in the UK and later worked as a session singer in London before venturing out on her own to pursue her own singing career.
Toured with UK pop-rock band ‘Voice of America’ in Yugoslavia. Toured and television appearances with Norwegian No 1 pop-rock band ‘Dance with a Stranger’. Embarked on a World Tour with Simply Red. Television appearances with Simply Red nationally and internationally. Signed to Rondor Music Publishing company with a Single's deal with A&M records. Later signed a publishing deal with Sony Music in that same year. Toured Europe with French indie rock band Niagra. Television performances nationally with Belinda Carlisle. Album backing vocals for Mike Oldfield. Album backing vocals for Van Morrison. Toured as a backing vocalist with Virgin signed band Breathe. Formed her own band Human Nature. Performed at most festivals nationally and a weeks’ residency in Ronnie Scotts, Birmingham and performed at WOMAD. Joined an all-girl group the Divas. Worked in the U.K, Europe and in the States. Sung on debut single release entitled ’Emotions’ which was written by Dolly and had Radio One airplay. Live performances and TV appearances with chart-topping group Drizabone. Toured with James Taylor Quartet in the U.K, Europe and the Far East and television appearances nationally and internationally with James Taylor Quartet. Her production company SoularUK was set up in 2006, resulting in the release of her debut album, 'The Journey'. She is in the process of releasing her second album later in the year featuring Jazz pianist Yukako Yamano and Leeds finest Jazz musicians. Her credits also include function and corporate work.
