About Chris

London based classical bouzouki player
Bouzouki
London

Chris Christodoulou was born in London of Greek Cypriot parents. He has been playing music since the age of seven, and became devoted to the Greek instrument the bouzouki. Having gained qualifications in music theory, Chris developed a desire to challenge the common association of the bouzouki with folk music and tavernas. He went on to read music at university in London, where he studied under the late Raenelda MacKie and in 2012 achieved his Bachelor of Arts Honours degree in Music Performance for which he is the first, anywhere in the world, to major in bouzouki. In 2016 Chris continued his music studies under the supervision of professors Tim Ewers and Grahame Klippel, and in 2017 was awarded the title MMus in Music Performance. Chris did not part with his instrument, and whilst at university he worked hard on arranging and transcribing Western classical music for the bouzouki, resulting in several impressive public performances during that time. This included a very unique recital as part of his dissertation, performing his own transcriptions of concert works from the Baroque period. Chris was also invited to perform as a soloist with the Middlesex University chamber ensemble in 2009 and 2010, giving public performances. Chris has continued working on classical repertoire and has remained active as a performer, most recently giving a series of lunchtime concerts for the Wren churches in the City of London. Other recent engagements have included sharing a platform with pianist Laura O'Gorman for an evening recital in Hampstead, London.
