London

Charles Kieny is a French Paris and London based accordionist, synth player, and composer. He is extremely versatile and takes part in many projects, mainly in the fields of improvised musics. Recently graduated from the Paris National Superior Conservatory's Improvised Musics department, great Jazz masters inspire his artistic approach. He was invited two times at the Académie Musicale de Villecroze, where he worked with Richard Galliano and Vincent Peirani, and was employed later as an arranger for the Maîtrise de Radio France. Charles believes that above all genres, what defines a music is people who play it. Therefore, he is always in a hunt for new experiences and musical cross-breedings: he can be heard playing in symphony orchestra projects (such as Kevin Lam's "Kind of A Prodigal Son" and Ellinoa's expanded version of "Wanderlust"), or in delirious Drum'n'Bass band Sayag Jazz Machine, as well as in Fabrizio Cassol's and Alain Platel's last collaboration Requiem Pour L, which gathers jazzmen, traditional Congolese musicians and South-African opera singers. Charles seizes every opportunity to expand his experience, and regularly participates in various live performances such as the Comédie de Genève's version of the Threepenny Opera, or Lido de Paris' review "Paris Merveille". In 2019 he's involved in the ONJ (France's National Jazz Orchestra) youth orchestra and works with François Jeanneau on his 1980s repertoire, which originally didn't contain an accordion part. His latest projects as a leader are highly miscellaneous as well: CKRAFT, a group composed of Jazz and Metal musicians, executes a powerful mixture of Gojira/Meshuggah influenced riffs with typical melodic material from Gregorian chants. Quy-Gone, a currently recording Jazz/Hip-Hop 6tet, features Malawian rapper Edash Quata and premiered in Double-Neuf Hip-Hop Festival in Paris. Smaller formations are completing this colourful panoply for which Charles is constantly trying new compositions, such as a 2 cellos and accordion(s) trio Crozphonics (featuring Vincent Ségal) a duet with Taiwanese flautist Ya-Heng Chen, a duet with guitarist Martin Ferreyros, and another duet with pianist Thibault Gomez, which will premiere at Salle Cortot in Paris in March 2020. All this music is downloadable for free on internet. The latest "what's on" is available on social networks

Customer questions

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

We always try our best to be flexible to help ensure your event runs as smoothly as possible. If timings change slightly in the run up to the event just let us know.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

We can set up a playlist for you and plug a compatible device on your PA system.

How much time do you need to set up?

For solo / duo performance max 30min, for more we usually plan an hour

Can I pick the pieces you play from the set list?

Our set lists are crafted from countless rehearsals and performances and learning what works best to ensure guests enjoy the music at its best. However, we're definitely happy to chat through and make sure we find what works for your event.

Do you bring all the equipment you need to perform?

I bring my own instrument to play acoustically. As for bands, we will need to talk about the backline that is required based on your event

Can you learn specific pieces before the event?

If a song isn't included in our song list there may still be a chance we already know it. If there is a special song you'd like us to learn we are happy to do this for you. There is a fee of £50 for this service to take into account rehearsal times etc. as we will rearrange it specially for you too :-)

What do your clients love most about your performances?

They love the originality of my music, I usually get a lot of "I didn't know one could do this with an accordion" because it's a quite unusual instrument in the Jazz landscape

Which artists have you been most influenced by?

Kurt Rosenwinkel is the first name that pops up in my head now, but many other Jazz musicians I guess
