Bruno Bower was born in 1987, and took up the oboe at age 11. He read music at Oriel College, Oxford, studying oboe with Celia Nicklin and composition with Robert Saxton. While at Oxford he maintained an active performing life, including several solo recitals and concerto performances, and worked with the majority of Oxford University’s premier ensembles, including Oxford University Orchestra, Philharmonia, and Sinfonietta. He went on to study for a PGDip in performance on oboe at the Birmingham Conservatoire with Jenni Phillips and George Caird. While there he played principal oboe for the BC production of The Magic Flute, for the contemporary music ensemble (Thallein) and for the BC Symphony Orchestra. During this time he also participated in several mastercourses in Austria and Germany with Christian Wetzel (Hochschule für Musik und Tanz, Köln), winning 2nd place in the International Sommerakademie Prag/Wien/Buapest 'Interpretation of New Music' competition in 2010. He completed a masters in musicology at King's College London in 2012, and a PhD at the Royal College of Music in 2016, with a thesis on nineteenth-century programme notes for orchestral concerts. Through his academic studies he maintained an high level of performing activity, appearing in a masterclass with Chris Cowie and cor anglais studies with Christine Pendrill. He has performed with many of London's top amateur ensembles, including the Salomon Orchestra, Westminster Philharmonic Orchestra, and Forest Philharmonic, and is currently principal oboe of West London Sinfonia and second oboe and cor anglais for Chelsea Opera Group. He performed the Strauss Oboe Concerto with West London Sinfonia and Oberon Symphony Orchestra in 2018, and is scheduled to give another performance with Westminster Philharmonic in 2019.
