About Bernie

Ceilidh Craic, for fitness, fun and friendship.
Accordionist
Dunfermline
Public liability insurance of £10 million

Bernie Hewitt is now retired from a full career in public service which included a lot of experience working with international organisations. Since his first attempt at retirement he has worked in Saudi Arabia, as business tutor at Fife College and as a recruitment consultant. From the age of 14 he has played the accordion, and now plays (and calls) ceilidh sessions as a solo artist, leads a small ceilidh band, has taught ceilidh dancing as exercise classes in fitness centres and lays on dementia-friendly Scottish music shows in care homes. In the past he has played for ceilidhs in places as far afield as Florida and Bangladesh, but now works from his home in Dunfermline, travelling all over the Central Belt of Scotland, and sometimes a bit further. His favourite gigs are playing a ceilidh set at weddings and other parties, where his music gets people onto the floor, and not long afterwards, having managed several different ceilidh dances, are usually panting for breath, dripping with sweat and shouting for more.

Customer questions

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

This is not usually a problem. I try to be as flexible, but would ask that you tell me about any changes to timings as soon as possible.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

Not normally. If you have something to want to play through my system during breaks, there is usually a spare channel to plug it into.

How much time do you need to set up?

Normally 30 to 40 minutes, after all the kit is in the room. It also takes up to 30 minutes to clear away at the end, which needs to be taken into account if you need to be completely clear of the venue by a given time.

Can I pick the pieces you play from the set list?

I'm more than happy to try to include any favourite ceilidh dances you want, but it's better if I know about them in advance and can plan the session accordingly.

Do you bring all the equipment you need to perform?

Yes.

Can you learn specific pieces before the event?

It might be possible, depending on what you want.
