Originally from Ellesmere Port, Alex started playing the trumpet whilst at primary school and worked his way through the ABRSM grades. Alex had an interest in jazz from an early age and this lead to him becoming a key member of the Whitby High School Jazz Ensemble. When he turned 13, Alex joined the Wirral Schools Big Band and this provided an abundance of big band experience. As Alex progressed through school he enjoyed playing the trumpet more and more and scouted opportunities to play in different school productions of many popular musicals, not just on trumpet but on keyboard too. This lead to him becoming the Musical Director for a handful of these productions, such as We Will Rock You and Our House, which required him to lead from the keyboard. In 2012 Alex was awarded a place on the BMus Jazz Course at the prestigious Birmingham Conservatoire, where he has studied closely with Percy Pursglove, Richard Illes, Robbie Robson, Steve Fishwick, Mike Williams, Hans Koller Clark Tracey and Mark Hodgeson. Whilst at the Conservatoire, Alex chose to learn the double bass under the tuition of Arnie Somogyi and he is regularly hired as a bass player for a large number of gigs throughout Birmingham. In 2014 Alex featured as a bass player for two shows in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, one of which was for Nick Mohammed’s “Mr Swallow The Musical”, a sold out show. Throughout his time at the Conservatoire Alex has been fortunate enough to be able to attend classes with Greg Gisbert, Frank Greene, Mike Rodriguez, Elliot Mason, Jeff Ballard, Mark Turner, Dave Holland,  and have composition lessons off Maria Schneider, Stan Sultzmann and Hans Koller. Alex currently holds a deputy chair in NYJO (National Youth Jazz Orchestra) in which he has performed along side members of the Jazz at Lincoln Centre Orchestra and played on BBC broadcasts. In Alex’s fourth year at the conservatoire he has been the lead trumpet player of the Jazz Orchestra, Performing in workshops with artists like Maria Schneider (where he also was a featured soloist) and Elliot Mason, and concerts with Dave Holland, Nate Smith and Stan Sultzmann. Alex is a member of MYJO (Midlands Youth Jazz Orchestra), which is directed by John Ruddik MBE). Alex also plays with BJO (Birmingham Jazz Orchestra), he has played concerts and featured on the Orchestra’s second album Rough Boundaries. In his third year, Alex was elected leader of the Birmingham Conservatoire Jazz Composers Orchestra.
