Michael Phillips is a student reading Music at the University of Manchester. He currently studies Flute with Linda Verrier and Helen Wilson and Composition with Richard Whalley.
An active performer, Michael has given solo and ensemble recitals across the country, performing in venues including the Royal Albert Hall, Royal Festival Hall and Royal and Derngate (Northampton), as well as performances in Londonderry, Berlin, Prague and Budapest, with upcoming engagements in Germany and Croatia. He was a member of the National Youth Wind Orchestra of Great Britain, and currently sings with Manchester-based chamber choir Ad Solem, who featured on a recording of Vaughan-Williams' Sea Symphony with the Hallé Orchestra in February 2014 and in performances for the BBC. He has played Principal Flute and Principal Piccolo for Manchester University Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra and Contemporary Music Ensemble 'Vaganza', and has premiered commissions of several new works, both solo and ensemble. Michael has worked with esteemed conductors and ensembles, including Esa-Pekka Salonen, the Philharmonia Orchestra and the Rodolfus Choir; Andrew Penny MBE and the Hull Philharmonic Orchestra; Justin Doyle, Tijmen Botma and Dr. Glenn D. Price.
As a composer, Michael’s works have been featured in numerous performances both at the University of Manchester and further afield. In 2011, a work of his was recorded in association with London-based record label Music Chamber, and premiered by Sian Philipps (Violin) and Sophia Rahman (Piano) at The Forge, Camden, before being released on commercial CD. Michael will continue his studies next year with a MusM in Instrumental Composition at the University of Manchester.
