James McAulay

At Douglas Academy, James was exposed to a wide range of musical experiences, and involved himself in chamber ensembles, choirs, orchestras, vocal ensembles, cover bands and more. His first real taste of large-scale music making came in 2007, when he gained a place in the National Children's Orchestra of Scotland as co-principal cellist, becoming principal a year later. Though James came close to studying music at a conservatoire level, he decided to study Computer Science at University instead, and was fortunate enough to land a place at the University of Cambridge, where he joined the bustling music scene. As a chamber musician, James received an Instrumental Award Scheme scholarship. James played with CUMS Symphony Orchestra, CUOS, KCMS, SCMS, Robinson Choir, CUPO, and many other projects. In his second year, James saw a problem with the way students planned their May Weeks in Cambridge, and so built WhichMayBall to aggregate all of the relevant information into one place. Immediately after graduating in Summer 2014, James joined the Entrepreneur First accelerator and began working on Encore, which has been his full-time focus ever since.
