About Graham

Professional multi-style cello player living in Edinburgh
Cellist
Edinburgh

Having played the cello classically from six years old, with a bit of metal, post-rock and folk along the way, I have developed a unique style which can range from a visceral rhythmic machine to a cloud of subtle ethereal atmospheres - but I can of course provide the classic lovely cello sounds too. During my 20 years of learning the cello, I completed ABRSM Grade 8 (Distinction) and won the 2012 Edinburgh Competition Festival solo strings recital class. Since then I've spent a lot of time exploring rhythmic techniques such as chopping and Moeller technique, as well as exploring the sonic possibilities of effects pedals and DAW-based plugins. I am adept at covering a multitude of styles, and am equally at home playing strictly classical music as I am playing The Beatles or Billie Eilish or Metallica. As one half of alt-folk band The Jellyman’s Daughter, I have released two critically acclaimed albums of original music receiving airplay on BBC Radio 2 & BBC Radio Scotland and have frequently toured the UK, Europe, USA, Canada and Australia. We have played prestigious events such as Celtic Connections, Port Fairy Folk Festival, Woodford Folk Festival and more. I have provided cello on a vast array of recordings over the years, and have played live with acts such as Honeyblood, Andrew Wasylyk, Finn Anderson, Blue Rose Code, and have supported the likes of Ben Folds, Lucius, My Brightest Diamond, Keb' Mo' and the Dalai Lama. I have also played many weddings and events before, solo or as part of a quartet or trio, and I am very flexible in terms of the needs of the events, and as a skilled string arranger I can adept at putting in the effort to accurately arrange and faithfully perform any song requests you might have. I am also an experienced audio engineer, having completed an MA Sound Production in 2015, and I can use this expertise if your event has any technical requirements, for example if the instruments require amplification or if any track playback is required. I have a vast network of musician acquaintances to call upon for additional musical ensembles, including some pretty specialist instrumentalists, so I can be a useful asset in bringing the absolute best musical addition to your event.
