About George

Musical Director of The Carice Singers; Lay Clerk with the Choir of Magdalen College, Oxford; Artistic Administrator at Longborough Opera
singer (Baritone)
Oxford

I am a singer, conductor and scholar of early-twentieth-century Anglo-Irish music. In 2011, I was awarded the Elgar Society's Certificate of Merit for initiating an Elgar Festival at my school, St Edward's Oxford. In the same year, I founded The Carice Singers, and have since directed the choir in a number of concerts and recordings. While studying at Cambridge I was Artistic Director of the Sidney Sussex Arts Festival 2013 and inaugurated the Lady Frances Song Competition, a university-wide contest for solo singers. I am currently a Stipendiary Clerk with the Choir of Magdalen College, Oxford and work at Longborough Festival Opera. My dissertation this year considers how Arnold Bax constructed the West of Ireland as a 'Celtic' Other in his early tone-poems, and I am supervised in this by Daniel Grimley.
