Douglas Tang

Douglas Tang is an award-winning conductor, keyboardist and coach whose career spans Europe, Asia, the United States and Australia. Born in Hong Kong and educated at a Swiss-German international school, Harrow School and Dulwich College, he gained diplomas in piano and flute before taking up the organ comparatively late. He subsequently won an organ scholarship to the University of Cambridge, where he studied music and served as Organ Scholar of the Choir of King’s College, Cambridge. Douglas has held appointments including Assistant Director of Music at St Mary’s Cathedral Sydney, Chapel Organist of the Old Royal Naval College Greenwich, and Organ Scholar of Hereford Cathedral. He has also worked as an organ and vocal consultant for leading churches and choirs, advising institutions including Winchester, Chester and Rochester Cathedrals. He is currently Director of Music at St Pancras New Church, London. As a conductor, Douglas has directed orchestras, opera companies, chamber and cathedral choirs, consorts and choral societies throughout the UK and Europe. Projects have ranged from Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea and conducting the Choir of Exeter College, Oxford at the Tower of London, to Christmas with the Stars at the Royal Albert Hall and conducting, arranging and performing at Malcolm Young’s funeral. His recording work includes projects for Disney, Marvel, the BBC, Hyperion and Willowhayne. An accomplished keyboardist, collaborative pianist and répétiteur, Douglas has worked with the Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Britten Sinfonia, London Sinfonietta and Aurora Orchestra. As a continuo player, he has performed with the Academy of Ancient Music, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and London Mozart Players. He was recently appointed official accompanist of the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod. His international career has taken him to venues including the Sydney Opera House, Royal Albert Hall, Wigmore Hall, St Paul’s Cathedral, Birmingham Symphony Hall, Esplanade Singapore, Washington National Cathedral and Prague Cathedral. He has an extensive discography and has broadcast internationally on television and radio. His recording The Hereford Experience received critical acclaim for its musicianship, vitality, fluency and technical mastery. A passionate advocate for musical education, Douglas has taught and coached conducting, opera, chamber music, musicianship, piano and organ at institutions including the Royal Academy of Music, Royal College of Music, Guildhall School of Music & Drama and Trinity Laban Conservatoire. He has also taught for Oundle for Organists, the Royal College of Organists and Eton Choral Courses. Douglas is an advocate for contemporary music, having premiered and performed works by Cecilia McDowall, Robin Holloway, Graham Fitkin, Dobrinka Tabakova, Francis Pott and Francis Grier. His awards include the Brian Runnett Prize and Musica Britannica’s Sir Anthony Lewis Memorial Prize. Today, Douglas combines conducting, performance and teaching through a selective portfolio of artistic projects, championing undervalued repertoire and thoughtful programming. He remains committed to the highest standards of musicianship, preserving and developing the English choral tradition while contributing to the wider world of classical music.
