From my earliest concerts at the Royal Brussels Conservatoire to my Carnegie Hall debut, I always yearned to be on stage: immersing myself in the sounds of the instrument and having the chance to communicate with people through music. I started performing internationally after winning the 1st prize at the Steinway Piano Competition in Hamburg at age 13. I have since performed in ten European countries and the United States, in prestigious venues including St Martin-in-the-Fields in London, Nichols Hall in Chicago and Luxembourg Philharmonie. I obtained my Masters Degree from the Royal Northern College of Music in 2017 and have been combining my performing career with teaching and lecturing duties. I am a believer in the transcendental power of music and its ability to help us feel more empathy and embrace our shared humanity and feel that in our increasingly polarised world, music is the key to a kinder and fairer society. My repertoire ranges from everyone’s favourite classical works, from Bach to the romantic era, to modern day lounge music.

Over the last three years, pianist Yulia Vershinina has built a loyal following in the North-East. Now based in Belgium, since graduating with an MMus, Russian born Vershinina has been appointed a Professor of Keyboard at the Luxembourg Conservatoire. Making her fourth visit Classical Cleveland at Stokesley, Vershinina presented two major selections, six of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Preludes from opus. 23 and opus.32 and eleven of Bach’s Goldberg Variations. The recital opened in a studied and measured mood with Rachmaninoff’s Prelude in G Major, followed by the vividly contrasting and somewhat explosive opening of his Prelude in B-flat Major. The oppressive quality of the Prelude in B minor built an atmosphere of tragedy and the Prelude in D Major restored a mood of contemplation and tranquility. Vershinina’s interpretation of the Prelude in E Major exposed Rachmaninoff’s most complex emotions with finesse and restraint. In dramatic contrast, the Prelude in G Minor provided a moving and fitting conclusion to the first part of the recital. Vershinina moved with confidence and elegance through the musical and technical challenges posed by Bach’s Goldberg Variations.

Bach was explicit about his motivation in composing the two-part Inventions. They were to encourage the ability to play in two parts clearly, to cultivate a cantabile style, and to stimulate a taste for composition. The Vershinina/Lee duo has certainly taken him at his word. Their counterpoint is lucidly articulated; their cantabile, compelling. […] All in all, an invigorating and beguiling spring clean for the ears!

Customer questions

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

I try my best to be flexible to ensure the smooth running of the event. However, I would appreciate if you could let me know of any changes in time as soon as you can, to help me prepare accordingly.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

Unfortunately not, I do not have the necessary equipment or skill set for that.

How much time do you need to set up?

As the piano/keyboard would be already in the venue, I would just need about 15-30 minutes to try out the acoustics and to understand the space better.

If I have a piano at my venue, are you happy to perform on that?

Yes, in fact that would be preferable as I do travel with my own instrument. However, it would be worth checking that the instrument is in working order and in tune before the event.

Can I pick the songs you play from the set list?

Absolutely you can pick up the songs from my list of songs. However, I am happy to learn specific repertoire for your event. This is something we can discuss ahead of time, to ensure you have a programme perfectly suited to your event.

Are you able to bring your own piano or keyboard?

Unfortunately no, I would need to use the piano that is there in the venue.

Can you learn song requests before the event?

Absolutely I can and this is something we can discuss when planning the programme for your event. Their might be an extra fee if the extra pieces are challenging or require much extra preparation time.
