William Johnston

Born and raised in North-East Fife in Scotland, William took to the guitar at age 10 where his spark for the guitar and popular music began. Influenced by The Beatles, Dire Straits and Led Zeppelin, William would go on to study Applied Music at the University of Strathclyde in 2010, where his new passion arose - the classical guitar. Studying under the tuition of Neil Wilson (RSAMD) at university, William dedicated his studies to the classical guitar, and on graduating, won the Alexander Stone Award for excellence in his honours recital alongside his first class honours degree. Since graduating in 2014, William has balanced a busy career of performing and teaching guitar full-time for Glasgow City Council. Early during the pandemic, William won 3rd place in the 2020 BoulderBach Festival International Virtual Competition in the Open Category for Keyboard & Plucked Instrument and was the highest ranked guitarist of the competition. He is the only person to have been featured in every video project of the Virtual Guitar Orchestra since its inception in 2020, including an exclusive 9-piece ensemble dedicated to Beethoven’s 250th birthday titled ‘9 Symphonies for 9 Guitars’. In early 2020, William completed his debut album, ‘Bach, The Beatles and Beyond’ which incorporates many of his passions, both musically speaking as a guitarist, but also as a recording engineer and a photographer.
