Victor SUN began his musical training on the violin at the age of 5, and he has been studying with the renowned violinist Ms. Jue Yao since 2004. He obtained his ATCL, LTCL and LRSM in 2006, 2007 and 2008 respectively. In 2005, Victor started his piano study under Mr. Geoff-Erik Li, and attained his ATCL in May 2009. Since 2008, Victor has also been taking viola lessons with Ms. Ming Li, violist of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, and he acquired a distinction in the LTCL the next year.
As a soloist, Victor has been actively participating in the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival and got various prizes in violin, piano and viola classes. He has given recitals in Hong Kong, London and Cambridge. He also performed Mozart’s Violin Concerto no.4, Khachaturian’s Violin Concerto and Bartok’s Viola Concerto with the Harrow School Orchestra under David Woodcock in 2011 and 2012.
In chamber music, Victor has played in various chamber ensembles both in and outside schools he attended. He led the Wah Yan College, Kowloon String Quartet to win the first prize in the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival (String Ensemble Class) playing Shostakovich’s String Quartet no.9 in 2010. Victor has also received coaching and played with members from the Chilingirian String Quartet, Endellion String Quartet, members of Suk Chamber Orchestra and London Haydn Quartet. In 2007, he participated in the Ameropa Chamber Music Festival held in Czech Republic and performed in the various venues in Prague and Cesky Krumlov.
Victor is also an enthusiastic orchestral musician. In school he has been concertmaster and principal violist of his schools’ symphony and string orchestras. In 2010, 2011 and 2014, Victor was invited to participate and appeared as principal violist in the Asian Youth Orchestra and performed on concert tours in Hong Kong, China, Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam and Thailand. Victor has worked with celebrated conductors such as Sir Roger Norrington, James Judd, Richard Pontzious, Stephen Cleobury and Peter Stark.
Currently, Victor is an Instrumental Award holder in University of Cambridge on both violin and viola. In 2012-2013 he was the principal violist of Cambridge University Chamber Orchestra. He is now in his final year reading Aerospace and Aerothermal Engineering in Trinity College, Cambridge.
