Born in Taiwan and raised in South Africa, Tzu-Fan has been based in London since completing a Masters of Music at the Royal College of Music under Natalia Boyarskaya. Recent highlights include co-leading Philip Glass’s Heroes Symphony at Glastonbury and being invited to perform the Bruch Violin Concerto with his South African hometown orchestra, the East Cape Philharmonic.
He has also performed in Italy and the UK as a concerto soloist whilst he was a member of Southbank Sinfonia, and has performed chamber music in the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room, Crush Room of the Royal Opera House, as well as orchestral concerts at all of the main concert venues in London.
Winner of a number of accolades for his achievements in chamber music, including the first prize for the National Ensemble Competition in Stellenbosch and the winning chamber music group in the ATKV Musiq Competition, he is very much involved in making chamber music in London and Cape Town, where he studied under Farida Bacharova at the South African College of Music.
Tzu-Fan’s current focus is working on projects that break the ‘classical’ music barrier by bringing chamber music to alternative venues, and playing for a BBC Radio 6 broadcast recording in collaboration with Charles Hazlewood and Will Gregory (of Goldfrapp) that combines Moog synthesizers with baroque ensemble has sparked an interested in combining electronic elements to acoustic violin. He currently performs on a violin made by Frédéric Chaudière.
