About Torquil

Young bagpiper with extensive performance experience. High standard of proficiency with a willingness to accomodate any request.
Bagpiper
London

I have been playing the bagpipes since the age of 6, and have been competing at a high-level in both band and solo competitions since I was 12. I have provided tuition to younger players, and have payed at public events across the UK. Highlight performances include those for members of the Royal Family, film and tv personalities, and golf stars. I am living in London and am willing to offer my services for any event that may require a piper. I always dress appropriately and pride myself on offering a professional service. I can play a range of tunes, from classical scottish marches to pop and rock music. For Burns Night, I can also address the Haggis and give the Selkirk grace

I hired Torquil to play at our wedding reception as a surprise for my Scottish husband, and Torquil was brilliant from 1st communication to the end and everyone enjoyed it.

We hired Torquil to play at our wedding in Canterbury. Communication before and on the day was excellent, where he took our preferences onboard and enhanced it with his own expertise. He even learnt a new song for us with about 2 weeks notice. He arrived on time and was exceptional on the day, liaising with the venue staff as we were otherwise quite busy. The guests loved it and it was a great way to elevate an already amazing day. Would definitely recommend.

Torquil, Thankyou for your amazing service, you warm personality shined through and you delivered in giving a warm welcome to our vip guests of the opening of our new clinic Optical Express Clinic in Great Portland Street. You played so well that you turned heads of public walking by. Thankyou and look forward to working again with you.

Torquil was excellent and helped make our reception very special. He played in the garden and then piped our guests into the venue. They loved it and all the non-Scottish guests fell in love with the bagpipes! Torquil was very flexible with arrangements and replied very quickly to our messages. He was a pleasure to work with!

Torquil is a professional and reliable performer. He played the bagpipe beautifully and everyone wanted to listen more and more. He is definitely the best entertainer for a formal or informal event. He also read the 'Address to a Haggis' during the evening and was outstanding. Highly recommended!

'I have heard Torquil play in a range of settings, in a concert, in a ceilidh and just having fun in a "pipe off". What comes across is his knowledge and love of the instrument, his musical skill, and professionalism.

Customer questions

What do your clients love most about your performances?

My clients are typically impressed by my playing quality, and the visual spectacle of the performance. I enjoy engaging guests in conversation and talking them through the mechanics of the bagpipes. I always try and meet the emotional requirements of any performance, funeral, wedding or dinner party, and I treat every performance with the greatest respect.

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

I have performed at: Holyrood Palace The British Embassy - Berlin Murrayfield Stadium Glasgow Royal Concert Hall St Paul's Cathedral The Scottish Parliament Edinburgh Castle Stirling Castle

Which artists have you been most influenced by?

I was taught in the history and lore of traditional highland bagpiping, learning the names and playing styles of luminaries such as GS MacLennan, Donald MacLeod and Donald Macpherson. I am also a great fan of more modern and innovative styles of piping as practiced by Gordon Duncan, Fred Morrison and Ross Ainslie.

What is the most high profile gig you've performed?

I performed for the Prince and Princess of Wales during their trip to Edinburgh. I performed for the British Ambassador in Berlin. I have played at numerous Remembrance Services, often to crowds in excess of 500 people.

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

I will try and be flexible with any timing changes. Accomodation can be made for on the day time changes however date changes need to be provided at least a week in advance

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

N/A

How much time do you need to set up?

I normally need at least 30 minutes to tune my instrument, as well as get an impression of the performance space.

Can I pick the pieces you play from the set list?

Absolutely. You can also provide any requests to me in advance and I will always try and accommodate them.

Do you bring all the equipment you need to perform?

Yes.
