Tom Smith is a versatile freelance musician based in Glasgow, Scotland. Playing the bass trombone, and also offering a high professional standard on contrabass and tenor trombone, tuba and euphonium, his experience includes orchestral, contemporary, commercial, and soloist work. Tom has featured on Radio Scotland as a bass trombone soloist and plays bass trombone regularly with professional orchestras including the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra (bass and contrabass trombone), Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Scottish Opera, Scottish Concert Orchestra and Scottish Festival Orchestra. As a session Musician he has worked with “Belle and Sebastian”, “Idlewild”, “Admiral Fallow”, "North Atlantic Oscillation", "Roddy Hart and the Lonesome Fire", “The Amphetameanies”, “God Help the Girl”, "The Mike and Ruthy Band", “Bare Bones”, “My Latest Novel”, "Kettle of Kites", "How To Swim" and currently is a member of up and coming Scottish band “Turning Plates”. Tom has played at many of the UK's leading festivals including T in the Park, Celtic Connections, The Proms, The Commonwealth Games, The Wickerman, Belladrum, and the Madness House of Fun Weekender. Tom was educated at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, now Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and in 2010 received a Masters degree with distinction. During his time there Tom played with several of the college's prestigious groups, took part in an apprenticeship scheme with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, played in an ensemble made of players from "The Golden Section" and students, was a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland, and won the Governors Recital Prize for Brass along with the Prize for Excellence in Brass. As a tutor, Tom works at some of the most prestigious schools in Scotland. He instructs brass pupils at Kilgraston School, Strathallan School, Craigclowan Preparatory School and Works with children at the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland (Junior and Senior Orchestras), the Junior Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, the "Big Noise" (Sistema Scotland) projects, and West of Scotland Schools Concert Band.
