About Tobie

An active member of the UK Jazz/Gypsy Jazz circuit. Violinist and Pianist specialising in European Jazz, Bebop and Classical.
Violinist
Beckenham
Public liability insurance of £10 million

I’m a violinist from London. I'm an active Jazz violin player on the UK Gypsy Jazz circuit. After a high level training in Composition from the Royal College of Music and the University of Leeds, I followed a rather unconventional path in Jazz. This jazz training was gained on the road, by traveling the North of England busking. Since learning the craft I have frequented high profile venues across the country. These include Birmingham Symphony Hall, St. John's Smith Square and Leeds Town Hall. I have also toured Europe with notable gigs at leading Sarajevo jazz club 'Jazzbina' and the Mostar Gipsy Festival. These days I am the director of the big London Gypsy Jazz festival, as well as a record label. I'm really versatile, and can bring a variety of styles to your event. My large network of musician friends, and eclectic musical background, means that I can pull together a top notch band in many styles. These include: Gypsy Jazz - Duo, Trio, Quartet or full Hot Club Quintette (a la Django Reinhardt!) American Jazz/Bebop/Swing - Quartet with Guitar/keyboard, Double Bass and Drum Kit. Trio with Double Bass and Guitar. Classical Ensemble - Duo (myself and piano/guitar accompanist), Trio, String Quartet. Solo - With or without backing tracks. My repertoire ranges from baroque era classical (Bach, Vivaldi...), modern classical (Ravel, Prokofiev...) to contemporary Jazz, Funk and Blues! As a member of the LGBTQ+ community I am an excellent choice for events which require an open minded band, who are comfortable entertaining people from all walks of life! If you have any song requests, just ask! I'm always happy to learn new songs, and entertain people with their favorite music! :)

Customer questions

What do your clients love most about your performances?

I usually bring a fun, charming group of band mates, and we play in a super sophisticated - but hopefully not too stuffy! - way. We love what we do, and love to entertain! But we also take what we do very seriously.

Which artists have you been most influenced by?

Django Reinhardt, Bela Bartok, Joe Henderson, Joe Pass, Stephane Grapelli.

Do you have different line-up options?

Anything you want! I have a large network of top notch musicians, and am happy to fix any particular band for your event, as long as it lies within the Jazz or Classical realm!

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

I'll always try our best to be flexible to help ensure your event runs as smoothly as possible. If timings change slightly in the run up to the event just let us know.

How much time do you need to set up?

This varies a lot, however I'll always aim to arrive in good time. An average of 30 mins should be plenty.

Can I pick the pieces you play from the set list?

Absolutely :)

Do you bring all the equipment you need to perform?

Yep! Although sometimes we will need electricity from the venue.

Can you learn specific pieces before the event?

Absolutely, just ask and I'll learn it :) as long as its not an insanely complicated modern jazz tune which cycles through a different odd time signature every bar, or a super modern atonal classical piece, I'll be more than happy to learn it for you!
