About Tianyi

Tianyi Lu is a conductor based in Cardiff. She is regularly engaged professionally by orchestras around Wales, Australia and New Zealand.

Tianyi Lu is the Music Director of the Cardiff University Opera Society and is regularly engaged professionally by orchestras around Wales such as the Cardiff Philharmonic Orchestra, the Abergavenny Symphony Orchestra and the St. Woolos Players in Newport. She curates her own concerts at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama where she also assists David Jones, the Conductor-in-Residence on orchestral and operatic productions. She recently assisted visiting conductor Carlo Rizzi on the RWCMD’s performance of Britten’s War Requiem. In 2015 sees her travelling to Australia and New Zealand to work with the Hopkins Sinfonia, the Manukau Symphony Orchestra and a staged production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute with Opera Otago. Later this year she will be will be working as a Guest Assistant Conductor with the renowned Hallé orchestra under Sir Mark Elder. She will also begin her post as the Junior Conducting Fellow at the RWCMD later this year, which will involve assisting work with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. In rehearsal, concert or masterclass, Tianyi has conducted players from the Hallé, Berlin Philharmonic, St. Petersburg Philharmonic, New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, and has attended masterclasses in the UK, Germany, Russia, Estonia, Australia and New Zealand. Last year she was voted as one of the top 3 finalists at the twelfth 'Interaktion Dirigentenwerkstatt des Kritischen Orchesters’ by players of the Berlin Philharmonic and orchestras from all over Germany. Tianyi began conducting studies at the University of Auckland, New Zealand with Uwe Grodd, before continuing with John Hopkins at the University of Melbourne, Australia. Other teachers have included Neemi Järvi, Sian Edwards, Alexander Polynichko, Kenneth Kiesler and Marin Alsop. Tianyi currently studies with David Jones at the RWCMD.
