Thomas Marlin has a portfolio that extends across three continents, and is equally at home as a soloist, chamber musician, or orchestral musician. Recent highlights in London include Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 1 with Janus Ensemble, recitals in the New North London Synagogue and the Barbican’s Milton Court Concert Hall, and joining the London Symphony Orchestra for a project under Sir Simon Rattle. As a recitalist and chamber musician, Thomas has performed in famous venues such as the Rudolfinum in Prague, London’s Wigmore Hall and Elisabeth Murdoch Hall in Melbourne, and has collaborated with Johannes Moser, Li Wei Qin, Kristian Winther and T’ang Quartet. He formed the Volta Quartet in 2014 and with them has travelled to Riga, Latvia, and Berbiguieres, France, and has been broadcast on BBC Radio 3. In April, the Volta’s will attend the International Musician’s Seminar, Prussia Cove, where they will study with Thomas Ades. From 2012‐13, Thomas was a member of the Duomo Quartet, with whom he performed throughout Asia, Europe and Australia, and was broadcast on ABC Classic FM. In 2015, he gave his first performance in Germany ‐ a private recital in Oldenburg ‐ and will return for another recital in May. Thomas has appeared as a soloist with various orchestras in his native Australia including the Jan Sedivka Camerata and the Adelaide Youth Orchestra. He is the principal cellist of Janus Ensemble and in the past year has also featured as principal cellist with the Barbican Chamber Orchestra, Melos Sinfonia, Silk Street Sinfonia, Goodensemble, Lakeside Ensemble and the Guildhall Symphony Orchestra. In Singapore and Australia, Thomas was the principal cellist of the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory Orchestra, under the batons of Mark Wigglesworth, Eiji Oue and Jason Lai, was the principal cellist of the Adelaide Youth Orchestra for an extended period, and led many cello sections in various Australian Youth Orchestra programmes. During this period, he was also a guest member of both the Adelaide and Singapore Symphony Orchestras. Thomas has appeared at festivals including the Adelaide Festival, Adelaide Fringe Festival, Adelaide International Cello Festival, Australian Festival of Chamber Music, Ameropa Chamber Music Festival (Prague), International Holland Music Sessions and Kalaa Utsavam (Singapore). Thomas holds a Masters degree in Music Performance from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and Bachelor degrees from the National University of Singapore and the University of Tasmania. His principal teachers were Janis Laurs, Christian Wojtowicz, Li Wei Qin and Louise Hopkins, and he also received lessons from Howard Penny and David Takeno. Thomas has held a lifelong interest in history, enjoys reading philosophy, cosmology and politics, and can be caught keeping up to date with all the news relating to his favourite sporting teams.
