Uni Band was never originally going to be the name but its one of those things which sticks! We originally got together in the initial weeks of our first year of being at the University of Kent. I met our drummer Isaac Truzzi Franconi, bassist Philippe Blouin and guitarist/singer Joe Robinson through the University’s Music Society which at that time was being run out of Coopers (the local student bar). Despite the differing music tastes of the band we jammed and found tunes that we all liked playing which is something ranging to pop, jazz and funk. From then on we became regular performers at Music Society with popular tunes such as I Wish, Treasure and Caravan to name a few. In Spring of 2017 we entered a Battle of the Bands competition with the aim of having fun rather than to win. However to our surprise we made it to the finals and won after facing off against ‘Look Both Ways’, another band who had met much like ourselves and played a slightly more rocky set than ours. Upon winning Battle of the Bands our prize was to perform at Kent University’s Summer Ball 2017 which is probably one of the highlights of being in this band so far, performing on the same stage as Becky Hill and Tinie Tempah. As you can see from the picture above we were also joined by percussionist Tom Deane who added a fantastic selection of instruments to our rhythm section. Looking to the future now Uni Band has unfortunately lost bassist Philippe Blouin but gained a new member on bass, Joel Fitzsimmons, who was originally the guitarist/singer for ‘Look Both Ways’. We have some exciting new sets to play this year still keeping some of our older popular tunes, so if you are around Medway sometime this spring on a Tuesday night come and see us play at GK Union’s Music Society!
