The Red Velvet Set

The Red Velvet Ensemble is the classiest jazz band in the West Midlands! We specialise in providing sophisticated, high-quality live music for upscale venues, restaurants, and private events. With a refined sound that blends jazz standards with smooth, modern arrangements, the Red Velvet Ensemble adds a touch of class to any setting—whether performing as subtle background music or taking centre stage for a lively performance. We pride ourselves in our professionalism, flexibility, and ability to create the perfect atmosphere for any occasion. The Red Velvet Ensemble consists of three highly skilled musicians: trumpeter and bandleader Christian KC, guitarist Ollie Canham, and bassist Macy Wright. All graduates of the prestigious Royal Birmingham Conservatoire with degrees in Jazz, we have been collaborating for over four years since first meeting during our studies. Our shared academic background and extensive experience performing together ensure a polished, professional sound that reflects both our technical expertise and deep musical chemistry. We pride ourselves on being flexible, not only in terms of our musical selection, but also with our lineup. We work closely with a plethora of fantastic jazz musicians, including singers, drummers, pianists, and saxophonists. For more intimate settings, our drumless trio is often the optimum choice (perhaps with the addition of our wonderful vocalist Grace Connor), while larger venues or events may be improved with a drummer, especially when we’re taking centre stage. This adaptability ensures that the ensemble can meet the specific needs of each client, while always maintaining a high level of professionalism and musicality. Logistically, we’ve got everything covered: For the more intimate gigs, we can play acoustically, or use small amps to give the guitar and bass a little boost. If you’re worried about the trumpet being too loud for your venue, don’t. Not only can our trumpeter play as quietly and softly as needed, he also has a variety of mutes he can use to help control the dynamic. For a more energetic gig, we can provide a sound system or connect to the venue's PA, and if necessary we can provide a sound engineer for an additional fee. In terms of travel, we are happy to perform anywhere from Birmingham to Sydney and back again, for the right fee of course. Travel expenses are incurred after 30 miles from Birmingham New Street. We typically play 2x45 minute sets, with a short 15-20 minute break in between. However, we are happy to tailor our sets to your specific requirements.
