The Painted Fall's Reviews

"Their programme was interesting and imaginatively compiled and it introduced me to 20th century composer Madeleine Dring, whose work I had not come across before. Her 'Come Away Death' was written in 1949 for elegiac voice and harp and 'Take O Take Those Lips Away' had a similarly plaintive mood. The two voices singing in harmony were particularly effective in Taylor Swift's 'Love Story'. It was thought provoking to have the programme end with two versions of Shakespeare's Sonnet 29 written a hundred and fifty years apart, one by Hubert Parry and the other by Rufus Wainwright. All in all the Shakespeare in Music Festival offered a wonderful series of events. This was just the first."

Customer questions

What do your clients love most about your performances?

Our clients love that they get a band of four from two people, as we can both sing and play our instruments together to create a much more intricate and interesting sound. We can take songs from almost any genre and put our Painted Fall spin on them! They also enjoy our performances and setlists carefully curated to suit each client.

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

We recently opened the Shakespeare in Music Festival in Stratford-Upon-Avon, but have previously enjoyed performing in multiple churches in London, and some beautiful wedding venues across the UK, including the Bodleian Library in Oxford.

Which artists have you been most influenced by?

We love making our favourite songs our own, as a classical crossover style. From ABBA to Enya, there's a little something for everyone in our sets!

Do you have different line-up options?

The Painted Fall consists of just two players, but we use our ensemble in a variety of different ways as we both play our instruments and sing. Sometimes we arrange songs for solo voice and harp. We have some purely instrumental arrangements for viola and harp as well. We have the flexibility to play in a variety of different ways.

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

Yes, we definitely try to be flexible. If something changes, give us as much notice as possible to ensure we can accommodate any changes.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

We have a small amp which we can use to provide additional music with, and we can take on-the-day requests at no additional charge. All we need is a power source.

How much time do you need to set up?

Around 30 minutes to allow us to set up and tune our instruments.

Can you roam around while you perform?

Typically our performances are stationary - the pedal harp is big and is not movable during performance. However we would be able to bring a smaller instrument for a partially roaming set, at an additional fee. Please enquire for more details! (note: this would be unamplified)

Can I pick the songs you play from the set list?

Yes, we love to curate setlists specifically for each event we do and will happily work with you to create this.

Is all of the equipment (e.g. PA & lighting) included in your quote?

We are able to perform acoustically or with a small amp, which is included in our quote. All we require is a power source at the venue!

Can you learn song requests before the event?

We currently accept up to 5 song requests (outside of our songlist) free of charge. If you have a song/songs you would like, please have a conversation with us to ensure we can arrange and learn the song in time for your event. There's always a chance we know the song even if not on our song list, so please ask us :)
