About The Night Shift Collective

The best of swing, jazz and RnB to compliment your special event.
Jazz trio

The Night Shift is a cool jazz trio with top level musicality and taste featuring piano, upright bass, sax and flute We're at our best at social events, society and club dining, fizz and canapé receptions, civic and heritage concerts and wine and cocktail bars. We offer a mix of instrumental and vocal jazz classics, plus upbeat soul and RnB numbers when the time is right. We read the room and adapt our set to the mood of your guests, whether as a subtle backdrop to dining or an infectious upbeat shift when the time is right which will soon get people up dancing around their tables or on a dance floor. Core musicians are Peter Brown, Izzy Ryder and Ian Wray on, respectively, double bass, piano, sax and flute. Other guest players are brought in on vocals, guitar, vibraphone, drums, percussion and much else as needed. We range widely, from Duke Ellington to Elton John, from Wayne Shorter to Van Morrison, from Joe Zawinul to Antonio Carlos Jobim. So every performance is a refreshing surprise. Sometimes as much for us as you. We come from very different musical backgrounds. Peter from the Merseybeat era, Ian from the post punk world and Issy from a 1st class degree in music from Cambridge. The collision of our styles and abilities creates a surprisingly natural fit. Our music is suited to so many situations from background music for formal black tie dining and receptions to concerts in historic settings. Whatever your event we can deliver the best entertainment curated and formatted to suited to your guests or clientele.

We were lucky to have the fabulous group THE NIGHT SHIFT at our formal dinner. Wonderful musicians playing a wide variety of music. Professional and extremely friendly. We would definitely invite them to entertain us for future functions. West Kirby Musical Theatre Company

Customer questions

What do your clients love most about your performances?

Primarily always want our audiences to be comfortable and to enjoy themselves. We enjoy our gigs and engage with your guests; it positively reflects back to how they feel about the event.

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

Individually we've played so many venues in our lifetimes for me it would be the Llangollen Eisteddfod (5000 seater) and the Tung Auditorium at the Yoko Ono Theatre. From a band point of view: Liverpool's Blue Angel: Jacaranda: Beachcomber; Eric's, and so many more. We know what we're doing.

Which artists have you been most influenced by?

That's a tough one for a trio with such different backgrounds. Me, 60s music - Beatles, Merseybeat: Eagles. IanJohn Coltrane, Sonny Boy Williamson. Izzy is an award winning classical/jazz composer who also writes choral and organ music. She has a first class degree in music. Her influences are too vast to recount. She is currently Visiting Professor at LIPA

What is the most high profile gig you've performed?

Individually we have each preformed in major music theatres. Together as the Night Shift Collective our venues are less high profile more down to earth dinner engagements, parties; corporate events and the like.

Do you have different line-up options?

We are a Jazz and swing trio collective. Piano, saxophone and flute and double bass. But and add male and female vocals, guitar, drums, alto saxophone, vibes, trombone and further instrument musicians as needed in keeping with your budget

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

We will always try and accommodate changes if possible.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

This is a really popular request and we actually offer this track service for free.

How much time do you need to set up?

1 to 1.5 hours before the performance time. As soon as our PA is set up we can provide a free playlist service to help set the atmosphere

Can you roam around while you perform?

No.

Can I pick the songs you play from the set list?

Our song list on this site is extensive and we can add many more. We're experienced musicians who read music. Tell us what you want and, if possible, we pick up the score from various sources and play for you

Is all of the equipment (e.g. PA & lighting) included in your quote?

Yes

Can you learn song requests before the event?

Normally yes (unless its a massive orchestral piece) and we can take requests on the night.
