About The Emerald Guard

Barbershop group
London
Public liability insurance of £1 million
Acclaimed contemporary Barbershop Quartet performing a wide variety of numbers in the barbershop and a cappella style.

The Emerald Guard have been singing together since 2012. Contrary to popular belief the quartet’s name does not have Irish roots, nor does it come from any reference to The Wizard of Oz. The true origin of the name is far more obscure and frankly puzzling. It comes from a Japanese game show from the 80s called Takeshi’s Castle (oft repeated on Challenge TV, voiced over by Craig Charles) which is like a low budget “It’s a knockout”. In the TV show The Emerald Guard are defenders of Count Takeshi’s Castle so obviously it makes a lot of sense to name a barbershop quartet after them (...) In May 2013 the Emerald Guard won the Gold Medal in the annual National Barbershop Quartet Competition, and they competed at the International Quartet Competition in Portland, USA in July 2015. When not cramming for competitions, the Guard perform at weddings and shows across the country, and with their home barbershop chorus, Sheffield's Hallmark of Harmony. They were also featured on BBC1s The One Show, and have appeared in musicals and on radio.

Customer questions

Do you have different line-up options?

The Emerald Guard consists of 4 singers - Tim, Duncan, Andy and Antoine. As we are a barbershop quartet this tends not to change! However, on rare occasions we will suggest a substitute singer should one of us be unavailable for a certain date.

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

We always try our best to be flexible to help ensure your event runs as smoothly as possible. If timings change slightly in the run up to the event just let us know.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

Unfortunately not.

How much time do you need to set up?

No time at all! We do not require a PA or any other audio equipment, so we can start singing pretty much as soon as we arrive.

Can you roam around while you perform?

Absolutely - as we do not require any equipment we can perform anywhere that is required.

Can I pick the songs you play from the set list?

If you would like us to perform a specific song from our setlist just let us know.

Is all of the equipment (e.g. PA & lighting) included in your quote?

N/A (see above!)

Can you learn song requests before the event?

If you have a particular song request that isn't on our setlist, please let us know when booking and if an arrangement of the song exists we will do our best to learn it for you. Note that an additional charge would apply in this case.

What do your clients love most about your performances?

Clients love the fun energy and dynamism of our performances, and our flexibility to adapt to many moods, performance spaces and situations

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

We have performed at venues all over the UK as well as overseas in the USA, Ireland and the Netherlands.

Which artists have you been most influenced by?

We take insipration from modern barbershop quartets (Vocal Spectrum, Ringmasters, Musical Island Boys), but also from jazz and blues artists such as Joe Stilgoe, Ray Charles, the Four Freshmen and The Real Group.

What is the most high profile gig you've performed?

Probably a spot on BBC1's The One Show in which we introduced a presenter to barbershop music and got him started in his own quartet. They did a decent job in the end!
