Sylvia Schmidt

Sylvia is an incredibly versatile improviser with a mesmerising tone, precise pitch and a cracking time feel. Her song interpretations are wonderfully lyrical and imaginative. Sylvia Schmidt has been sweeping the stages across Europe and the UK dipping her nose into a wide spectrum off creative projects. She had the great pleasure to perform with many jazz bands, choirs, chamber ensembles and orchestras. In 2008 Sylvia established herself in London where she completed a Batchelor degree at Middlesex University’s renown jazz department under guidance of jazz legends such as Nikki Iles and Chris Batchelor. In her 19 years of music education and experience she has carefully crafted her voice into a fine versatile instrument. Sylvia has joined a multitude of projects in styles such as jazz, swing, jive, gypsy, folk and latin; as well as written and performed her orignial music. She is the lead-singer of the Between The Lines Jazz Band offering her skills and professional services for functions, weddings and corporate events. She fronts and writes for the contemporary jazz band Esquivo and regularly collaborates in duo settings with Sam Leak, James Kitchman, Maria Chiara Argiro and Shirley Tetteh, to name but a few. Her latest adventure has taken her to the excitingly open spheres of free improvisation. With her trio White Flower she is playfully exploring textures, sounds and dynamics; infusing poetry and folk melodies. As part of Mimika Ensemble she is even lending her voice to slavic folk communities, water spirits and ancient gods. Sylvia has performed at many prestigious venues and events across the UK including Vortex Jazz Club, the O2 October Sessions, Pizza Express Jazz Club (Soho), The Forge, The Green Note, Charlie Wright's Jazz Club, The Arts Depot,, The Crypt (St. Martin In The Fields), The Chickenshed, Blackheath Halls, The Queen’s Hall (Edinburgh). Sylvia has had the pleasure to perform for: The Savoy, The Landmark Hotel Marylebone, Grosvenor House, Cliveden House Hotel, Danesfield House Hotel, Cavalry & Guards Club, Savile Club, Rififi Members Club, Mr Foggs Members Club, The Serpentine Gallery, The Grand Hotel (Charing Cross), Westfield Shopping Centre Stratford and many more. She has been a regular guest at the Edinburgh, EFG London, Marlborough, Reading, Derry, Fife and Cork & Kinsale Jazz Festivals, amongst others.
